The British royal family did not publicly acknowledge Meghan Markle's 45th birthday, following protocol that reserves official greetings for working royals only since she left duties in 2020.
The Duchess of Sussex, who stepped back from royal duties alongside her husband Prince Harry in 2020, received no social media tribute from the Palace on Tuesday, a decision rooted in protocol rather than personal animosity, according to Leah Bitsky writing in New York Post.
Royal commentator Tom Sykes explained that birthday wishes for a private citizen would be handled privately, and there is no possibility of public acknowledgement on royal social media channels. The policy has been consistent since the Sussexes relocated to California and formally withdrew from their official roles.
Kinsey Schofield, another royal expert, confirmed that the royal family has reserved official birthday wishes for working royals only for several years now. Harry, Meghan, and their children have not been included in this practice since their departure from royal life.
Private Gestures Expected From King Charles
Despite the absence of public recognition, both experts believe some family members will likely reach out privately. Sykes noted that King Charles III is known for his politeness and would almost certainly send private birthday wishes to his daughter-in-law.
Schofield suggested Charles may have palace staffers dispatch a gift or card, noting that the monarch has maintained a compassionate approach and has rarely been overtly unkind toward Meghan despite ongoing family tensions.
Prince William and Kate Unlikely To Reach Out
The likelihood of birthday wishes from Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, appears far more remote. Sykes indicated the Sussexes would not be expecting any communication from the Prince and Princess of Wales.
Schofield stated bluntly that no relationship exists between Markle and her brother-in-law anymore. The Wales couple reportedly believe Meghan played a significant role in damaging family trust, making any suggestion of private birthday exchanges unrealistic.
Private Celebration In Montecito
Markle marked the occasion on Tuesday by posting photographs of herself jumping into a pool while holding birthday balloons. She thanked supporters for their birthday messages in the social media post.
Schofield predicted Markle would celebrate surrounded by family and friends, possibly at familiar Montecito establishments like Lucky’s Steakhouse or Tre Lune, both frequented by the Sussexes.
Last year, Markle celebrated her 44th birthday at Beverly Hills restaurant Funke, posting an image of herself with a birthday cake and thanking her husband, friends, and family for making the day special.
Markle has not received a public birthday message from the royal family since 2020, when she and Harry departed for California with their two children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5.
Tentative Reconciliation With King Charles
While relations with King Charles were initially strained following their departure, the Sussexes have reportedly been working to mend ties with the monarch and Queen Camilla. The couple visited them last month as part of ongoing reconciliation efforts.
The relationship with the Prince and Princess of Wales, however, remains frozen, with no signs of reconciliation on the horizon.
