Pope declares remigration unchristian, attacks European right
Pope Leo XIV has publicly condemned European right-wing parties' remigration policies as un-Christian, calling the deportation of immigrants merely an attempt to be rid of the problem.
Speaking from Castel Gandolfo, the 70-year-old American pontiff argued that sending migrants back to their home countries amounts to simply wanting to be rid of the problem, according to Junge Freiheit. He characterized remigration policies as inconsistent with Christian values.
The statement comes just days after Leo XIV issued a separate message on migration in which he sharply attacked human traffickers and smugglers, telling them to stop their criminal activities. However, the Pope has now clarified that his criticism of criminal smuggling networks should not be interpreted as support for robust deportation policies.
Italy Becomes Focal Point of Migration Debate
The timing of the papal intervention is significant, as Italy is currently experiencing intense public debate over immigration and remigration. The newly established party Futuro Nazionale, led by former General Roberto Vannacci, has made remigration one of its core policy demands. The right-wing party is positioning itself as a more radical alternative to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s center-right coalition government.
On Saturday, supporters of stricter immigration policies demonstrated in Rome under the banner “Remigration and Reconquest.” Italian media reported that participants demanded Parliament pass legislation to curb immigration. Many demonstrators wore black T-shirts and waved Italian national flags.
Competing Visions Clash in Rome
The demonstration coincided with the founding party congress of Futuro Nazionale. Counter-protesters from trade unions, anti-fascist organizations, and left-wing networks gathered near the Colosseum in opposition to the remigration rally.
The Pope’s intervention represents a direct challenge to growing political movements across Europe that advocate for the return of immigrants to their countries of origin. His remarks underscore the widening gap between the Vatican’s position on migration and the policy platforms of conservative and right-wing parties that are gaining electoral momentum throughout the continent.
