Pence: Trump’s Iran Deal ‘Smacks of Appeasement’

Speaking during an appearance on CNN’s “The Source” on Tuesday, Pence argued that Iran has maintained a state of hostility against the United States and Israel for nearly five decades, according to Breitbart News.

The former vice president acknowledged Trump’s previous willingness to confront Iranian aggression directly, praising decisive military action taken against the mullahs in Tehran over the past two years. While conceding that the president has earned some negotiating flexibility following these confrontations, Pence expressed deep reservations about the direction of current talks.

Drawing on his extensive national security experience from White House Situation Room briefings and his tenure on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Pence emphasized his fundamental distrust of Iranian leadership. He pointed specifically to Tehran’s long record of deception regarding nuclear weapons development.

The potential memorandum of understanding being discussed smacks of appeasement, Pence warned, drawing parallels to strategies he associates with both the progressive left and isolationist elements of the populist right who favor American disengagement from global leadership.

Pence outlined specific demands that should form the basis of any acceptable agreement with Iran. These non-negotiable elements include complete dismantlement and abandonment of Iran’s nuclear program, elimination of its ballistic missile capabilities, cessation of all support for terrorist organizations, and restoration of freedom of navigation through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

The former vice president’s comments reflect growing conservative concern that diplomatic engagement with Tehran may compromise core American security interests and obligations to regional allies, particularly Israel.
