Obama Center Engineer Defends Polarizing Building Design

Chris Bird, a Washington DC-based structural engineer, designed the upper section of the tower featuring quotes from Obama’s speeches, according to New York Post. The design has sparked significant debate since the center opened to the public on Friday.

Bird disclosed that the architectural team worked directly with Obama, the 44th president, to create something striking at the tower’s summit. The result is 91 words from various Obama speeches wrapped around the building’s corner, comprising 433 individual letters, each standing approximately five feet tall.

The South Side Chicago facility spans 19.3 acres and drew thousands of visitors during its public debut. Bird described the project as architecturally unprecedented, noting the unique challenge of translating presidential rhetoric into structural design elements.

Mixed Public Reception

Responses to the center have been sharply divided. As New York Post reports, attendees at the opening used terms like phenomenal, breathtaking, and futuristic to describe the complex. However, online critics have condemned the structure as a monstrous insult to architecture, a concrete nightmare, and a monstrosity.

Bird dismissed such characterizations, arguing the tower represents a grand gesture rather than an eyesore. He emphasized that the building’s height aligns with surrounding structures in the neighborhood and blends appropriately with the park landscape.

Engineer Stands By Work

The structural engineer expressed satisfaction with the completed project, claiming it properly anchors the site and neighborhood. Bird said visitors displayed emotional reactions during opening festivities, with some moved to tears.

The Obama Presidential Center represents one of the most ambitious presidential libraries ever constructed, though its unconventional design continues to generate controversy among architecture critics and the broader public.
