Norway’s King Harald in Critical Condition as Family Gathers
Norway's 89-year-old King Harald V is in very serious condition with bacterial blood infection, prompting family to gather at his bedside as Crown Prince Haakon stands ready to ascend the throne.
According to Brussels Signal, Crown Prince Haakon, who has served as regent since his father’s hospitalisation on August 17, cancelled all scheduled engagements and rushed to Rikshospitalet in Oslo alongside Queen Sonja.
The monarch has been receiving treatment for fluid retention caused by cortisone therapy for haemolytic anaemia, a condition marked by abnormally rapid destruction of red blood cells. Symptoms include severe fatigue, breathlessness and elevated heart rate.
Crown Princess Mette-Marit, Prince Sverre Magnus, Princess Ingrid Alexandra and the king’s elder sister Princess Astrid all arrived at the hospital on the morning of August 27. Citizens began laying flowers outside the royal palace in central Oslo as news of the deterioration spread.
Palace officials revealed on August 23 that the king’s health had worsened over the preceding weekend, with a bacterial blood infection requiring antibiotic treatment. While initially responding to medication, his condition has since declined sharply.
Political Leaders Cut Short Foreign Visits
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre abandoned a planned trip to Germany upon hearing the news, telling AFP he was “deeply affected” by the developments. Masud Gharahkhani, president of the Storting, Norway’s parliament, cut short a visit to Iceland.
Harald became Europe’s oldest reigning monarch and has consistently rejected any suggestion of abdication, insisting that the oath he swore before parliament in 1991 was a lifelong commitment.
Recent years have seen the king fitted with a pacemaker following repeated infections, including hospital admissions in Malaysia in 2024 and in Tenerife in Spain’s Canary Islands this past February. Should he die, Haakon would immediately ascend to the throne.
Troubled Year for Norwegian Royals
The royal household has faced considerable turmoil in 2026. Crown Princess Mette-Marit underwent a lung transplant on June 17, eight years after her diagnosis with pulmonary fibrosis. She was also identified in Jeffrey Epstein documents released in the United States in January, which detailed her correspondence with the convicted sex offender.
Her son Marius Borg Høiby, who holds no position in the line of succession, was sentenced on June 15 to four years in prison for two rapes and 32 additional offences, including abuse of a former partner. Høiby is appealing the verdict and remains under house arrest with an electronic tag at the royal estate of Skaugum, an arrangement extended by an Oslo court until September 7. He was among those seen at the hospital.
Norway’s Constitutional Monarchy and European Position
Norway’s monarch serves as ceremonial head of state. The nation rejected European Union membership in referendums held in 1972 and 1994, though debate on accession resurfaced in 2025. Norway participates in the single market through the European Economic Area and the Schengen zone.
