NIKI: Demographics can’t be solved by altering Greek population
Greece's births fell to 65,400 in 2025-2026 from 117,600 in 2008-2009, with deaths reaching 120,800 and creating a demographic gap increasingly filled by migration.
Eurostat data reveals a critical demographic shift for Greece, with births having fallen to alarming levels, according to NIKI.
The country’s demographic collapse
The new statistics, as NIKI reports, record a worrying reality: during the two-year period 2025-2026, births stood at 65,400, nearly half the figure of 117,600 recorded in the 2008-2009 period. At the same time, deaths reach 120,800 thousand, creating a demographic gap that is particularly concerning for the country’s future.
The migration “problem” as a solution
Demographic gaps both at European and Greek level are being filled through migration flows. According to NIKI, these populations are considered functional as a low-cost economic workforce, but they do not constitute a strategic choice for the identity of the Greek state.
Political responsibilities
NIKI insists that the Greek people have not accepted the statements of Kyriakos Mitsotakis regarding the possible replacement of the Greek population with migrants. As it notes, although there have been repeated announcements, the Prime Minister continues to implement economic policies that do not favor young couples and new families.
Proposals for addressing the demographic problem
NIKI takes a clear position: low birth rates are not addressed by altering the population, but through substantial and targeted support for Greek families. The proposed measures include:
- Strengthening young couples and the family structure
- Developing a targeted plan to address zero births in municipalities facing demographic decline, through economic incentives, housing support and subsidy measures
- Abolishing income criteria for child benefits, so that they are provided to everyone without exception, based on the highest scales
