Migrant Charged with Helping Iran Target London Journalist
A Greek national has been charged with assisting Iran in targeting a journalist from Iran International, a Persian-language broadcaster critical of Tehran's regime based in London.
Ioannis Aidinidis, aged 46, appeared in court Friday facing allegations that he aided efforts to target a journalist working for Iran International, a Persian-language broadcaster known for its criticism of Tehran’s Islamic regime, as Breitbart News reports.
The Metropolitan Police Service issued a statement confirming the charges relate specifically to surveillance and targeting activity directed at personnel from Iran International. Commander Helen Flanagan acknowledged the broader implications of the case for journalists operating in the United Kingdom.
The senior police official noted that authorities remain engaged with multiple organizations and individuals to provide security guidance and protective support, including those directly connected to this investigation.
Pattern of Threats Against Dissident Media
Persian-language news outlets based in London have faced sustained threats from the Islamic Republic for years. Iran International itself was compelled to relocate its operations to Washington, D.C. in February 2023 after escalating security concerns for its journalists.
The broadcaster returned to London several months later but established operations at a new, undisclosed location to maintain security protocols.
Arrest and Detention
Aidinidis, a Munich resident, was detained on May 16 in West Sussex, located south of London. A magistrate subsequently authorized his detention without formal charges until May 30, indicating the serious nature of the ongoing investigation.
The case underscores the lengths to which the Iranian regime reportedly goes to suppress critical media voices operating from Western capitals, even extending surveillance and targeting operations onto British soil.
