Mattarella to Meloni Rally Behind Officer. Opposition Silent.
Italian political leaders mourned police officer Francesco Imprezzabile, who died after falling from his motorcycle during a pursuit, though some opposition figures drew criticism for their silence.
According to Il Giornale, President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella was among the first to respond, stating he was profoundly saddened by the tragedy and expressing solidarity with the fallen officer’s family. Senate President Ignazio La Russa noted that once again, uniformed officers are paying a high price for their sense of duty and service to the community.
Chamber of Deputies President Lorenzo Fontana called for full clarification of the circumstances surrounding the incident while extending gratitude to those who serve daily with courage and dedication to ensure public safety. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni honored Imprezzabile as a servant of the state, emphasizing that those who wear the uniform put their lives at service to others every day. Italy does not forget the sacrifice of those who work with dedication and professionalism to guarantee citizen security and respect for the law, Meloni stated.
Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini requested a prayer for Imprezzabile, while his counterpart Antonio Tajani shared words previously spoken by the fallen officer himself about the responsibility and calling that comes with wearing the uniform, describing it as a matter of vocation, passion and sense of duty that requires heart, honesty, respect and honor.
The Brothers of Italy parliamentary group requested that the Chamber of Deputies hold a commemoration for Imprezzabile. The Democratic Party leadership dedicated a minute of silence to the officer during yesterday’s meeting, with party secretary Elly Schlein expressing closeness and sincere condolences to Imprezzabile’s loved ones and colleagues.
From the Democratic Party, regional council group leader in Lombardy Pierfrancesco Majorino and deputy Matteo Mauri, the party’s security chief, also expressed their condolences.
Opposition Leaders Notably Silent
However, as Il Giornale reports, other center-left leaders chose not to address the tragedy. Five Star Movement leader Giuseppe Conte and Green Party leader Angelo Bonelli instead focused their public statements on attacking the government over hunting legislation. Nicola Fratoianni concentrated on criticizing housing policy, while Riccardo Magi of More Europe railed against proposed electoral law reforms and Matteo Renzi continued polemics about photographs and coalition alliances.
Only second-tier figures from other center-left forces issued messages of condolence, the report notes.
Five Star Movement parliamentarians serving on the Constitutional Affairs Committees of both chambers, including Carmela Auriemma, Vittoria Baldino, Roberto Cataldi, Alfonso Colucci, Felicia Gaudiano, Elisa Pirro and Pasqualino Penza, issued a statement emphasizing the state’s duty to provide logistical, economic and work-life balance support to uniformed personnel who serve with seriousness, dedication and rigor.
Senator Ivan Scalfarotto of the Italia Viva party claimed that public order remains a pressing issue and represents one of the main failures of the Meloni government.
