Left-Wing Extremist Violence Explodes in Germany
Germany recorded 1,087 left-wing extremist violent crimes in 2025, a 42.6 percent increase from the previous year and the highest level since 2016, authorities announced Tuesday.
Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt of the CSU presented the figures alongside Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) President Holger Münch on Tuesday morning, according to Junge Freiheit. The statistics come from the official registry on politically motivated crime (PMK), which tracks extremist activity across Germany.
Dobrindt emphasized the growing threat posed by the left-wing scene, noting that the 42 percent surge in violent offenses underscores an escalating danger. The minister announced plans to strengthen law enforcement capabilities and domestic intelligence services in the fight against left-wing extremism.
Violent Crimes Reach Highest Level Since 2016
The violent offenses tracked in the statistics include homicides, physical assaults, arson and explosive attacks, kidnapping, robbery, and sexual crimes. BKA President Münch stated that left-motivated crimes are gaining significance, having increased most sharply both in absolute numbers and as a percentage of total political crimes.
Overall left-wing extremist offenses surged by over 35 percent to 13,490 cases in the past year. The total number of politically motivated crimes reached an all-time high of 85,837 cases, with the increase primarily driven by the left-wing category. Münch attributed this rise to increasing polarization, extremist propaganda partly originating from abroad, and international conflicts that stir emotional responses.
Police Under Attack From Left-Wing Militants
Crimes against police officers increased by 4.7 percent compared to the previous year. Dobrindt stated this rise could be explained almost exclusively by the increase in left-wing extremist perpetrators. The 56-year-old minister called this an intolerable situation and announced plans to adjust criminal law.
The interior minister wants to introduce legislation to impose harsher penalties for resistance crimes against law enforcement personnel. He plans to bring a corresponding draft law to the cabinet in coordination with the Justice Ministry, expressing his belief in the deterrent effect of criminal law.
The left-wing scene is mobilizing significantly, particularly in street fights and sabotage acts targeting electricity supply and critical infrastructure, which frequently result in extensive property damage.
Religious and Foreign Ideological Crimes Turn More Severe
In the categories of religious crime and foreign ideology, offenses have not only increased but also become qualitatively more severe. The BKA chief emphasized an elevated threat potential from terrorist attacks.
Antisemitic crimes totaled 6,500 in 2025, marking a five percent increase. Half of these were connected to the Middle East conflict, particularly in the area of hate crimes from the left-wing category. Münch said the figures demonstrate the sharply increased polarization and radicalization in German society.
Right-Wing Violence Also Increases
Violent crimes in the right-wing category rose by approximately seven percent. Overall right-wing motivated offenses decreased compared to the previous year, registering 42,544 cases. Despite this decline in total numbers, Dobrindt maintained that the greatest current danger comes from right-wing extremism.
Nearly 20,000 cases recorded in the PMK statistics relate to xenophobic offenses classified as hate crimes. Nearly three-quarters of these cases were attributed to the right-wing category. Rising case numbers were also observed for antisemitism, anti-LGBTQ sentiment, and misogyny.
Espionage Cases Surge Dramatically
The threat from cybercrime, espionage, and state terrorism is also advancing. Recorded espionage cases jumped from 56 to 474. Attacks on officeholders and elected representatives declined by approximately 300 to 5,797 cases in the past year. Nevertheless, Münch characterized hostility against state representatives as an attack on the constitutional order.
The BKA president identified social media as a key driver, through which hate speech, incitement, and propaganda are disseminated. These platforms accelerate radicalization processes and lead in the worst cases to criminal acts in the physical world.
Münch concluded that the societal mood is intensifying and the foundation of democracy is under attack. Within the past ten years, politically motivated crimes have nearly doubled overall.
The PMK statistics track right-wing extremism, left-wing extremism, religiously motivated crime, and offenses related to foreign ideologies. It should be noted that numerous crimes such as swastika graffiti, even when committed by supporters of pro-Palestinian movements, may still be classified under the right-wing category.
