Lawmakers Condemn ‘Medieval’ Belfast Attack as Left Fears Backlash
British officials condemned a Belfast stabbing attack described as an attempted beheading, with police arresting a suspect believed to be from Sudan amid calls for transparency about his immigration status.
Video footage circulating on social media appeared to capture a man, seemingly of African origin, repeatedly stabbing the neck and head region of another man lying on the ground in what witnesses characterized as an attempted beheading, according to Breitbart News. Police issued an update Tuesday morning clarifying that the suspect, initially reported to be Somalian, is actually of Sudanese origin.
The shocking attack has reverberated across the United Kingdom. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer called the incident sickening and stated he has absolutely no tolerance for such abhorrent violence on British streets. The Prime Minister extended his thoughts to the victim and thanked first responders and members of the public who intervened.
Gavin Robinson, leader of the Democratic Unionist Party, told the Belfast Telegraph the stabbing was barbaric and medieval. Robinson stated that what he witnessed on social media over the previous 12 hours cannot be unseen, describing it as the systematic mutilation of a human being on Belfast streets.
The DUP leader emphasized this incident differs significantly from the assaults or criminal disorder sadly seen in many villages and towns throughout Northern Ireland. Robinson warned the attack could seriously impact community relations and stressed the importance of police speaking clearly and powerfully to provide all details, given this is not an ordinary incident.
Conservative Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp declared the attempted beheading in Belfast appalling and demanded the government ensure all details about the suspect’s nationality and immigration status are made public. Philp warned that if the man proves to be an illegal immigrant, it would provide further evidence that the government’s lack of border control is endangering the public.
Left-wing politicians quickly pivoted to warning about potential far-right backlash to the attack. Carl Whyte, a North Belfast Councillor from the Social Democratic and Labour Party, urged people not to share footage of the attack or engage with far-right elements who might use the incident to sow division.
Former SDLP leader and Foyle MP Colum Eastwood declared the Belfast attack should not be used by English right-wing politicians for their own ends, claiming he does not recall them commenting on other hellish things that community has experienced over the years. Social media users noted that Eastwood previously used the death of George Floyd in the United States to promote Black Lives Matter ideology in Northern Ireland.
The Times of London reported that anti-immigration protesters sought to capitalize on the incident by calling for a mass protest in Belfast on Tuesday evening, citing an anonymous social media post allegedly encouraging people to be prepared to fight or be arrested.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland has not yet revealed any potential motive for the attack. Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson said the force is treating the attack with the utmost seriousness and that their investigation continues at pace.
Henderson acknowledged officers arrived on scene within minutes and praised members of the public who strived to save the man from further attack. Their willingness to step forward to help another person shows incredible bravery and community spirit, he stated.
The police spokesman also urged the public not to share footage or repost images of the attack, warning that doing so risks causing further trauma to the injured man’s loved ones and may impact the ongoing investigation.
