LA Councilwoman Raman Complains After Homeless Camp Hits Her Home
A Los Angeles mayoral candidate who opposed buffer zones between homeless encampments and schools faced a protest camp outside her own home, revealing what critics call a double standard.
Nithya Raman, a Democratic Socialist city councilmember running for mayor, found herself confronting the consequences of her own policy positions over Memorial Day weekend when organizers deliberately set up a homeless encampment in front of her residence, according to Breitbart News.
One of the organizers explained their motivation to local media, stating they brought the encampment to her doorstep so she could witness firsthand what ordinary residents endure under policies she supports.
The incident stems from a 2024 Sherman Oaks Homeowners Association debate during Raman’s reelection campaign. When questioned about legislation that would mandate 500-foot buffer zones between homeless encampments and schools or daycare centers, she voted against the measure and defended her position with a now-infamous remark about children’s safety not being improved by distance from tents.
As the audience responded with boos, Raman visibly rolled her eyes at concerned residents. She ultimately won reelection despite the backlash.
The contrast between her dismissive attitude in 2024 and her recent reaction to the staged encampment outside her own home reveals a striking double standard, as Breitbart News reports. Despite knowing the demonstration was orchestrated, Raman appeared noticeably shaken, particularly regarding the impact on her children. Yet she failed to express any empathy for countless Los Angeles families living with the real-world consequences of her policies every single day.
Raman has also demonstrated remarkable detachment from voter priorities, expressing surprise that the mayoral race centers on urgent concerns like crime rather than her preferred issues.
Republican mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt swiftly criticized her disconnect on social media platform X, arguing that Raman believes the election revolves around bike lanes when voters are actually focused on combating fraud, addressing drug addiction destroying neighborhoods, and ensuring mothers feel safe throughout the city. Pratt characterized Raman as deeply unserious and unfit for the position.
The primary election concludes Tuesday, June 2, with the top two candidates advancing to the general election regardless of party affiliation. Current polling shows no clear frontrunner, with Raman, Pratt, and incumbent Democrat Karen Bass clustered together in a tight race. Any combination of the three could secure the runoff spots.
The campaign presents voters with stark contrasts. Bass presides over a city plagued by failures in basic governance. Raman appears disconnected from the crisis-level issues dominating resident concerns, having expected bike infrastructure to define the race. Meanwhile, Pratt has mounted an aggressive campaign centered on the fundamental quality-of-life problems that Bass has failed to address and Raman appears unwilling to prioritize.
The outcome will determine whether Los Angeles voters recognize the depth of their city’s decline and choose a different direction, or whether they remain committed to the progressive policies that have brought the city to its current state.
