The four leaders agreed to continue their cooperation on specific axes. These include improving security in the region, providing assistance to populations in need, fully implementing the new EU Pact on Migration and Asylum, as well as strengthening the control of the European Union’s external borders with respect for International Law.

The same statement refers to potential joint initiatives, while options under consideration include enhancing cooperation with countries of origin and transit, combating traffickers, and activating the EU Regulation on crisis situations.

At the same time, the Italian Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi will invite his counterparts from Cyprus, Greece, and Malta to a meeting in Rome on June 17, 2026, in order to better coordinate their actions in case of increased flows.

The leaders also welcomed the unanimous adoption of the Chisinau Declaration on migration, which took place on May 15 during the 135th Session of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe. The declaration acknowledges the complex challenges faced by member states.
