Itimoudis: What does “Trident” mean for Greece?
Greece signed an unprecedented shipbuilding agreement to create a maintenance and construction hub serving U.S. strategic interests against China in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The agreement that was recently signed is unprecedented for Greece, because if it is properly exploited, the game changes.
The creation of a shipbuilding hub in Greek territory does not come out of the blue, but is an extension of the plans for IMEC and the Vertical Corridor.
From what we learn, the plan includes:
- ship maintenance and repair capabilities
- upgrading of port infrastructure, logistics facilities and dual-use terminals.
installation of advanced robotic production lines, new high-tech equipment and specialized facilities for submarine construction.
The U.S. is obviously doing this in the context of competition with China, which holds the lion’s share in shipbuilding.
The Americans have brought the Koreans into the game, who are receiving huge contracts both in the U.S. and, as it appears, in Greece as well.
But why Greece?
Because the Eastern Mediterranean – Red Sea – Persian Gulf system, in order to be controlled without the presence of the Americans, must incorporate not only military but also logistical capabilities in order to project the necessary power.
I have emphasized on other occasions that Greece’s role is in the rear and in logistical support.
For now, offensive actions are being undertaken by the Israelis and the Emiratis.
Greece will emerge from its shell, however, due to its geography and proximity to all the strategic fronts in Ukraine and the Middle East, it is imperative for the time being that it be upgraded at the logistics level.
This particular development is a tremendous opportunity for the country, as for the first time we can break away from tourism, souvlaki and coffee.
