Greece Eyes Moving Patriot Battery from Karpathos to Crete
Greece considers moving a U.S. Patriot missile battery from Karpathos to Crete's Souda naval base amid concerns over potential Iranian retaliation against American targets in Europe.
The reassessment comes in the wake of recent American and Israeli military strikes against Iran, which have prompted Tehran to reportedly consider expanding its target set to include U.S. facilities across European territory should Washington escalate operations in the Persian Gulf region.
Greek defense sources indicated that the Patriot air defense system could be repositioned to provide enhanced protection for the Souda Bay installation, a critical asset housing both Greek naval forces and NATO operations.
“If it is assessed that Souda faces a significant threat then the Patriot battery could be transferred there from Karpathos,” officials told the Athens-based publication, emphasizing the potential need for reinforced defensive capabilities at the major military complex.
The current deployment of the American-manufactured missile defense system on Karpathos has drawn sharp criticism from Turkey, which has objected to the positioning of advanced weaponry on the southeastern Aegean island due to its proximity to Turkish shores. The potential shift to Crete would move the battery further from Turkish territory while strengthening defenses at a facility of considerably greater strategic importance.
Iranian Threats Extend Across Region
The Greek deliberations follow reporting by the Financial Times earlier this week citing two Iranian sources who confirmed that Tehran is actively evaluating strikes against American installations in Bulgaria and Cyprus should U.S. military action against Iran intensify.
The threat assessment underscores the widening geographic scope of potential conflict stemming from ongoing tensions in the Persian Gulf, with American allies and partner nations across the eastern Mediterranean and Balkans now factoring into Iranian strategic calculations.
Souda Bay represents one of the most significant naval facilities in the Mediterranean theater, serving as a forward operating location for U.S. and allied forces with access to both the Middle East and North African operational areas.
