German Weather Service Provides Special Forecasts for Pride Parades
Germany's national weather service is providing exclusive forecasts for LGBT pride parades in ten cities, raising concerns about politicization of the taxpayer-funded federal agency.
The German Weather Service, known as the Deutscher Wetterdienst or DWD, announced it will deliver targeted forecasts for LGBT pride events from June 6 through August 8, according to Junge Freiheit. The service operates under the motto “We Can Do Rainbows” and is coordinated by the agency’s internal LGBT employee network called BUNT@DWD, working in partnership with the CSD Deutschland association.
The forecasts provide morning, midday, and evening predictions specifically tailored for parade attendees. The DWD launched the initiative at the Dresden Christopher Street Day event last Saturday, declaring on Instagram that Dresden would show color regardless of weather conditions. Beyond Dresden, the federal agency is providing specialized forecasts for parades in Munich, Cologne, Leipzig, Frankfurt am Main, Stuttgart, Berlin, Bonn, Hamburg, and Essen.
According to its website, the DWD emphasizes that the program aims to expand reach through links and collaborations with local Christopher Street Day organizations. The federal meteorological service states the forecasts serve as a practical contribution to participants while creating awareness for diversity.
The campaign, which first launched in 2024, is described by the Offenbach-based federal agency as setting a sign for diversity and tolerance. The DWD emphasizes that diversity is written in capital letters at the organization, independent of gender, gender identity, ethnic and social origin, nationality, religion or worldview, physical and mental abilities, age, and sexual orientation.
In 2025, the DWD initiative received recognition from the PrOut@Work Foundation, which forms part of the Rainbow Foundations, a coalition of German foundations dedicated to LGBT causes.
The selective provision of weather services raises concerns about the politicization of what should be a neutral federal authority. A Saxon Higher Administrative Court in Bautzen classified the Dresden Christopher Street Day as a political assembly in a final ruling issued last Tuesday, reinforcing the political nature of these events.
The German Weather Service has not provided comparable specialized forecasts for other public gatherings such as the March for Life in Munich, highlighting the agency’s apparent political selectivity in choosing which events merit dedicated meteorological attention.
