Ex-Scottish Leader Denies Blame After Husband’s Guilty Plea
Nicola Sturgeon denied responsibility for her husband Peter Murrell's embezzlement of over 400,000 pounds from the Scottish National Party, insisting she had no knowledge of his crimes.
In a BBC interview on Sunday, Sturgeon addressed the guilty plea entered last week by her husband, Peter Murrell, who admitted to stealing more than 400,000 pounds—approximately $540,000—from the SNP whilst serving as the party’s chief executive, according to Breitbart News. The stolen funds were used to bankroll a lavish lifestyle.
Sturgeon maintained her position that she had no knowledge of Murrell’s criminal activity, telling the broadcaster that she felt betrayed by his actions and would not accept blame for another person’s wrongdoing.
The former First Minister’s remarks come amid widespread scepticism regarding her repeated claims of ignorance about the embezzlement. The scandal has intensified existing concerns about political accountability across the United Kingdom, following a string of controversies that have badly damaged public confidence in government institutions at every level.
Critics have raised pointed questions about why Murrell was permitted to continue as SNP chief executive after Sturgeon assumed party leadership in 2014. Sturgeon conceded this arrangement was an error in judgment, stating that with the benefit of hindsight, she wishes she could reverse that decision.
Murrell’s guilty plea brings to a close a five-year police investigation into the SNP, the party that has governed Scotland’s semiautonomous administration for nearly two decades whilst pursuing its core objective of Scottish independence from the United Kingdom.
The party descended into chaos throughout 2023 as mounting questions emerged over its financial management and a sharp decline in membership figures. Sturgeon governed Scotland for almost ten years before her unexpected resignation as First Minister in February 2023, puzzling political observers with her explanation that she knew both intellectually and emotionally that the moment had arrived to step down.
Murrell resigned from his position as SNP chief executive the following month after two decades in the role, accepting responsibility for providing misleading information to media outlets about the party’s collapsing membership rolls. Police arrested him at the couple’s Glasgow residence in April.
Sturgeon herself was arrested in June 2023 but was subsequently cleared by police of any wrongdoing.
