Europe responds with platitudes to Cyprus’ exclusion from Climate Summit
The European Union has issued only verbal protests after Turkey excluded Cyprus from preparatory procedures for the Global Climate Summit scheduled for November in Turkey.
Once again, the European Union is reacting with mere statements and lofty declarations of unity, proving unable to take substantive measures. At the center of the new crisis is the arbitrary expulsion of Cyprus from the preparatory procedures of this year’s Global Climate Summit, which will take place in November in Turkey and is expected to bring together around 200 countries.
Empty words without action from Brussels
The European Commissioner for Climate did not go beyond expressing Brussels’ displeasure regarding Ankara’s stance. According to Dimokratia, he himself claimed that Turkey’s position will not be accepted, stating that “we are a Union of 27”.
However, Europe’s communicative stance, which is exhausted in repeated messages of agreement and solidarity without practical impact or cost to the Turkish side, leaves Cyprus unprotected and calls into question the Union’s real capacity to defend the interests of one of its members.
