Ellison: Ex-NBAer White Playing in WNBA ‘Cruel’ Distraction
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison criticized Republican Senate candidate Royce White's plan to declare for the WNBA draft, calling it a cruel mockery of transgender people meant to distract from policy issues.
In an appearance on MSNBC’s “All In” on Monday, Ellison condemned White’s planned move as disrespectful and cruel, claiming the Republican candidate is using the stunt to distract voters from policy failures in Washington.
Royce White, who had a brief NBA career, has drawn national attention with his declaration to enter the women’s basketball draft, a move critics say highlights the controversy surrounding biological males competing in women’s sports.
Ellison characterized the announcement as an attack on the transgender community. He is mocking people in our community, the Democratic attorney general said, adding that transgender individuals are valued and legitimate members of society who do not deserve such treatment.
The Minnesota Democrat went further, suggesting White would fare poorly on a WNBA court. He specifically cited star player Caitlin Clark as someone who would embarrass White if they faced off, noting that White achieved little during his time in the NBA and would accomplish even less in women’s professional basketball.
Despite the quip, Ellison returned to his central criticism, calling White’s actions a deliberate effort to deflect attention from what he described as Republican failures on economic and foreign policy. He claimed that under GOP leadership in Washington, Americans have witnessed rising prices across essential commodities, increasing national debt, and involvement in unnecessary military conflicts.
According to Ellison, White’s WNBA declaration represents an attempt to redirect public scorn toward the transgender community rather than address substantive governing failures by Republican officials.
The controversy comes amid ongoing national debate over fairness in women’s athletics and the participation of biological males in female sports categories, an issue that has become a flashpoint in American political and cultural discourse.
