Desperate Situation in Crete: 268 Illegal Immigrants in 5 Cases in 24 Hours
Illegal migrant arrivals to Crete remain relentless, with Greek coastguards rescuing 268 people in multiple incidents along Heraklion’s southern shores within 24 hours, signaling ongoing border pressures.
The influx of illegal migrants to Crete continues unabated. In the past 24 hours alone, the Coast Guard located and rescued a total of 268 people in five separate incidents, the majority of whom arrived by inflatable boats on the southern shores of Heraklion.
Last night and in the early hours, a patrol vessel spotted three separate inflatable boats off the southeast coast of Kalo Livadi, in the municipality of Faistos. A total of 142 people were on board the boats. The authorities immediately transferred them to a temporary accommodation facility in Heraklion.
A few hours later, another 83 migrants who had already disembarked in Tsoutsouras were located. Shortly thereafter, another 43 were found right at Kalo Livadi. In these two instances, the foreigners had managed to reach the shore before being detected by the authorities.
The authorities are closely monitoring the area, as flows from North Africa and Turkey to Crete have become an almost daily occurrence.
