Fashion designer Jeremy Scott tore up an AI-generated commencement speech at Kansas City Art Institute to demonstrate that artificial intelligence can only imitate rather than create authentic work.

A leading fashion designer delivered a powerful rebuke to artificial intelligence during a college commencement address earlier this month, literally tearing up an AI-generated speech in front of graduating students to demonstrate the technology’s creative bankruptcy.

Jeremy Scott, speaking at the Kansas City Art Institute on May 16, began his address by reading from a script generated by AI software that congratulated students on reaching their “threshold of a new beginning” and assuring them their power was limitless, according to Breitbart News.

The designer then paused mid-speech to confront the graduates with a pointed question about what they had just heard.

“Sounds kind of clichéd, right? Doesn’t sound authentic, does it? Sounds like you’ve heard it before, right? It’s because it’s AI,” Scott told the assembled class before physically ripping up the script.

Scott urged the graduates to reject allowing AI systems to dictate standards of right and wrong, framing the technology as fundamentally incapable of genuine creativity.

AI can only imitate, not create

The fashion designer argued that artificial intelligence systems cannot replicate the fundamental human capacity for original thought. AI can only echo, mirror, and imitate authentic human creativity without understanding quality or originality, he explained.

Scott emphasized that AI cannot distinguish between good ideas, unique concepts, and mediocre work, making the role of human artists more essential than ever in contemporary society.

He told the graduates that artists serve a vital cultural function beyond simply telling truth — they define what truth feels like and bend reality while reflecting society back to itself.

Growing American resistance to AI expansion

Scott’s critique reflects broader public skepticism about artificial intelligence that is increasingly manifesting across the United States, as Breitbart News reports. Citizens in multiple communities have mobilized to oppose construction of data centers required to power AI systems in their regions.

Social media users have also expressed frustration with AI-generated content flooding platforms including X and Facebook, diluting authentic human communication and creative expression.

This grassroots resistance stands in sharp contrast to the optimistic predictions of technology experts and advocates who continue to promote AI as a transformative force that will revolutionize human civilization and usher in unprecedented prosperity.

Industry leaders have repeatedly warned that societies rejecting AI adoption will fall behind economically and technologically. However, many ordinary citizens appear to view the technology not as human advancement but as a threat to humanity itself.

Scott’s public stand against AI at a major educational institution signals that battle lines are hardening between proponents of wholesale AI integration and those defending human creativity and agency against technological displacement.
