CSD Attacker: Abdul B. Named as Suspect in Van Ramming

A vehicle attack on Berlin's Christopher Street Day parade killed one woman and injured sixteen, with police hunting suspect Abdul Rahman Ballout linked to Islamist extremism.

JULY 26, 2026 AT 12:50 PM

According to Nius, Abdul Rahman Ballout is the prime suspect in the attack that occurred Saturday evening around 10 p.m. when a white mini-van plowed into crowds celebrating the annual LGBTQ event in the Tiergarten district. Police spokesman Florian Nath confirmed the suspect is known to authorities and is linked to Berlin’s Islamist scene. German media reports indicate Ballout may be a member of the Islamic State terror organization.

The attack left one woman dead, with three victims suffering life-threatening injuries and eight others severely wounded. Police have issued a public manhunt with photographs of Ballout, warning citizens not to approach him as he is considered armed and dangerous.

Ballout is a German citizen born in Berlin in 2005. He was released from juvenile detention as recently as May 2026, having served time for serious bodily harm and extortion-related offenses, according to information obtained by the German Press Agency.

Following the attack, the suspect or suspects fled the heavily damaged vehicle on foot. Police reports indicate that victims may also have been attacked with stabbing weapons in addition to the vehicle assault.

Midnight Raid Comes Up Empty

Special police forces conducted a raid at approximately 1:10 a.m. at Ballout’s registered address on Bissingzeile in the Schöneberg district, just 1.2 kilometers from the attack site. Witnesses reported hearing an explosion-like bang during the operation. However, officers left the scene at 1:25 a.m. without making an arrest.

The white van had careened through the Tiergarten park at high speed, striking numerous people before coming to a stop in a heavily damaged condition. Event organizers immediately canceled the celebration, which had drawn hundreds of thousands of attendees, and urged participants to leave the area calmly while avoiding the Victory Column and Tiergarten vicinity.

Mayor Defends Security Measures

Berlin’s Governing Mayor Kai Wegner arrived at the scene shortly after midnight, where he defended the security arrangements for the event. He stated that he believed the CSD was very well protected, having attended the parade himself that afternoon, but acknowledged that one hundred percent security is impossible to guarantee.

Wegner described how the city had experienced a magnificent CSD celebration with joyful crowds celebrating diversity, cosmopolitanism, freedom and love before the attack brought the day to a horrific end. Following his public statement, he entered the Tiergarten with his personal security detail to view the scene directly, declining to answer questions from journalists.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz condemned what he called an abhorrent act of violence against the Berlin celebration.

Pattern of Islamist Violence

The attack follows a disturbing pattern of vehicle assaults targeting crowds in Western European cities. Eyewitnesses described the white van traveling at high speed through the park, deliberately striking pedestrians in its path. The vehicle entered from Linnestrasse before carrying out the assault through the Tiergarten grounds.

At the time of publication, it remains unclear whether Ballout acted alone or had accomplices. Police have confirmed no arrests have been made and the manhunt continues for the suspect or suspects who fled on foot from the damaged vehicle.

The fact that a known Islamist extremist with a violent criminal history was free to carry out such an attack raises serious questions about monitoring and prevention of radicalized individuals in Germany’s capital.
