Crowding of Illegal Migrants in Gavdos: Forty More in New Rescue Operation
Authorities intercepted 40 undocumented migrants south of Gavdos Island amid rising smuggling activity; after checks, they’ll be swiftly moved to mainland Greece to ease Crete’s burden.
An alert was raised on Saturday by the maritime authorities after forty illegal immigrants were discovered in the sea area south of Gavdos Island. The foreigners were found during a scheduled patrol in the area, which is under increasing pressure from trafficking networks, according to MeaCulpa.gr.
The relevant authorities immediately mobilized and launched a retrieval operation, reinforcing efforts to address the ongoing wave of arrivals at the country’s southern maritime borders.
The forty illegal immigrants will be transferred promptly to the facilities in Agyia, where the necessary verification of their documents will be conducted. During this process, the authorities will proceed with full identification and cross-checking of their details against criminal record databases, in order to determine their origin and legal status.
Of course, the entrants throw their documents into the sea and claim that… they just feel like it. Literally!
After completing the bureaucratic procedures and health checks, the plan includes the rapid relocation of the immigrants away from Crete.
According to the schedule, the foreigners will board ships bound for mainland Greece within two days. There, they will be distributed across various inland accommodation centers to relieve the local services in Chania.
