Crowd Cheers Maria Karystianou at Olympion Theater
Maria Karystianou, a prominent figure from the Tempi case, announced the founding of a new political movement called "Hope for Democracy" at a packed event in Thessaloniki on May 21, 2026.
A large crowd eagerly awaited Maria Karystianou outside the Olympion cinema in the center of Thessaloniki on the afternoon of Thursday, May 21, 2026.
The well-known figure from the Tempi case arrived shortly before 7:30 PM and received warm applause from those gathered at the venue. As soon as she appeared, many began chanting slogans such as “With you Maria, to get rid of the mafia,” creating an atmosphere of intense mobilization.
Inside the main hall of Olympion, the reception was even more enthusiastic. The audience filled the hall, awaiting Karystianou’s speech, during which she is expected to announce the founding of a new political entity called “Hope for Democracy,” according to what has been made public.
Reception for Karystianou
A giant screen was set up outside the cinema for those who could not fit inside, while the crowd remained gathered throughout the event.
The evening was hosted by journalist Thanasis Avgerinos. Wearing a black t-shirt featuring Russian authors, he referred to Dostoevsky’s “Crime and Punishment,” emphasizing that those who have committed crimes must know that punishment is approaching.
Actress Katerina Moutsatsou also attended the event. With tears in her voice, she greeted all Greek Orthodox and declared her support for Maria Karystianou.
Among other things, she stressed the need for the restoration of democracy and the creation of a movement based on ethical and honest citizens.
The name of the new entity
The party is named “Hope for Democracy Maria Karystianou Independent Citizens’ Movement.” Ms. Karystianou herself prefers to describe it as a movement. The atmosphere in the hall was charged, with strong emotion and references to historical figures such as Kapodistrias.
Messages from the Diaspora
The event included videos featuring Greeks from abroad. An 18-year-old from Arizona, USA, spoke about the same need for restoration. Diaspora Greeks from New York and the president of Greeks in Saint Petersburg referred to betrayal, decline, and a deliberate economic crisis.
An online magazine publisher linked the message of Ioannis Kapodistrias with that of Maria Karystianou. Other speakers spoke of 200 years of governance by “subjugated and collaborationist” rulers and called for corruption to be prosecuted.
The overall picture
The gathering in Thessaloniki is considered an outright success for the message Ms. Karystianou wished to send: that of launching an electoral campaign with widespread popular support.
Yesterday’s political event reflects the significant momentum that has developed around Maria Karystianou in recent months.
The presentation combined political speeches with cultural elements, while many speakers voiced strong criticism of the political system’s operation and corruption. The event concluded with the audience showing enthusiasm for this new political initiative.
