A deadly ambush by gunmen from the Cartel Jalisco New Generation has claimed the lives of five police officers in western Mexico, with another five wounded in what authorities are describing as a coordinated assault involving at least seven cartel vehicles.

The attack unfolded this week near Nahuatzen in Michoacan state, according to Breitbart News, when a group of ten officers on routine patrol in two vehicles were suddenly blocked and overwhelmed by heavily armed cartel operatives who opened fire.

Law enforcement sources cited by the outlet revealed that the officers engaged the attackers and radioed for backup. However, by the time military reinforcements arrived at the scene, the gunmen had already withdrawn. Five wounded officers were transported to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment, while state investigators worked to recover the bodies of their five fallen colleagues and gather evidence from the crime scene.

The Cartel Jalisco New Generation, commonly known as CJNG, has been identified as responsible for the assault. The powerful criminal organization operates across Mexico and was officially designated a terrorist group by the United States government in 2025. Mexico’s federal government, however, has consistently refused to adopt the same designation despite mounting political and public pressure to do so.

The ambush highlights ongoing tensions between Washington and Mexico City over cartel policy. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has resisted American demands for a more aggressive campaign to dismantle drug trafficking organizations operating within her country’s borders.

President Sheinbaum has drawn criticism for shielding a criminally indicted governor from Sinaloa and his associates who face drug trafficking charges in the United States. Breitbart News has reported that these officials share ties to the ruling MORENA party, the same political movement to which Sheinbaum belongs, and maintain links to cartel networks.

Her administration has framed its approach as a defense of national sovereignty against foreign interference, a position that has intensified diplomatic friction with the United States while doing little to address the violent reach of Mexico’s organized crime syndicates.

Despite confirmation of the deadly attack, authorities have made no announced progress in apprehending those responsible for killing the officers.
