Video from a press conference on Tuesday’s attack at a school in British Columbia, Canada, shows Canadian police referring to the alleged school shooter by their preferred pronoun “they.”

The shootings took place at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, as well as at a residence.

The video was published by Rebel News Canada. In it, Deputy Commissioner Dwayne MacDonald says, using a pronoun commonly preferred by trans individuals:

We identify the suspect as they chose to be identified in public and on social media.

MacDonald went on to say that the suspect, who is deceased, was born male and “about six years ago began transitioning to female and was recognized as female both socially and publicly.”

Breitbart News reported that CTV News broadcast another press conference where the Commander of the Northern District of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Ken Floyd, described the alleged shooter as an “armed individual” rather than an armed man.

BBC noted that an alert was issued when the shooting was reported, describing the alleged shooter as a “woman in a dress with brown hair.” Floyd confirmed that the person described as “armed” was the same individual mentioned in the alert.

Nine people were killed in the shootings, and about 25 others were injured.

Stunning and brave! Canadian police are choosing to identify a trans school shooting suspect by his preferred pronouns. The victims’ families must feel so much better now! pic.twitter.com/cbFHxiNxLG
