Burnham Accused of Muzzling Firefighters Over Reform UK Support
Manchester's Fire and Rescue Service allegedly intimidated firefighters over their support for Nigel Farage's Reform UK party under Andy Burnham's oversight as mayor and fire commissioner.
Andy Burnham, currently serving as Greater Manchester Mayor, has announced plans to step down from his mayoral role and contest the Makerfield parliamentary seat in a bid to challenge Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer for the leadership of the Labour Party. Internal emails from April obtained by the Daily Mail expose how senior officials at Manchester’s Fire and Rescue Service warned firefighters about their involvement with Reform UK. Carl Petch and Humaira Ahmed, heads of the service’s so-called race and faith staff network, revealed they had confronted fire service personnel planning to stand in local elections for Farage’s party, citing unspecified concerns, as Breitbart News reports.
Unlike police officers who face legal restrictions on political candidacy, firefighters in Britain operate under no such prohibition. Yet as mayor, Burnham simultaneously holds the position of fire commissioner, placing direct oversight of the service squarely within his authority for at least the next ten days.
The email from Petch and Ahmed informed staff members that firefighters representing Reform UK had been confronted and reminded of their obligation to display core values and professional behaviours at all times. The message stated the service was pursuing formal legal guidance to protect its inclusive culture and ensure network members felt supported, respected and safe at work.
Most alarmingly, the communication encouraged fire service employees to report colleagues whose political activities caused them concern, inviting them to reach out directly with any personal issues or perceived impact.
Reform UK Shadow Home Secretary Zia Yusuf has demanded an immediate apology from Manchester’s Fire and Rescue Service to both the party and affected staff members. He has further called on the Electoral Commission to launch an investigation and insisted the service provide complete transcripts of all discussions leadership conducted with members regarding Reform UK support.
Yusuf condemned the actions as a shocking breach of electoral neutrality, particularly given the regulated election period. Hounding staff for lawful political views is unacceptable, he stated, describing the incident as proof that individuals questioning aggressive DEI agendas face professional retaliation.
The controversy arrives on the heels of the Fire Brigades Union endorsing Burnham’s parliamentary campaign and contributing £10,000 to his electoral effort. Labour Party insiders have expressed mounting anxiety over significant numbers of union workers abandoning the party for Reform UK, exposing the fiction that Labour still represents working-class interests rather than catering primarily to its increasingly urban and multicultural constituency.
Despite favourable polling in the Makerfield contest due to his regional popularity, Burnham confronts a formidable challenge from Robert Kenyon, a local plumber turned councillor standing for Reform UK.
Beyond immediate electoral implications, Free Speech Union founder Lord Young of Acton has urged Burnham to repudiate the censorious conduct at Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, warning that such behaviour creates a chilling effect on free speech among personnel who support Reform.
Lord Young noted that a public fire and rescue service under Burnham’s governance is effectively treating lawful political activity by his electoral opponents as a reputational hazard to their employer. He emphasised that regardless of whether this reflects Burnham’s direct instruction, it undeniably reflects his governance. A public office-holder who permits his institution to demonise or suppress the speech and political activity of those backing his principal electoral rival cannot legitimately claim to discharge his office with the impartiality it demands.
The scandal threatens to undermine Burnham’s carefully cultivated image as a moderate voice within Labour at precisely the moment he seeks to position himself as a credible alternative to the embattled Starmer government.
