Afghan Hunts Passersby with Knife in Exclusive Footage
An Afghan asylum seeker armed with a knife attacked multiple people including schoolchildren at a Bavarian train station Wednesday, with no injuries reported before police apprehended him.
According to Junge Freiheit, the incident occurred during the early morning hours at Ruhpolding station when the Afghan man allegedly attempted to stab several people. While no injuries were reported at this time, the suspect was apprehended by police and is said to be known to law enforcement authorities.
A police spokesman confirmed to Junge Freiheit that investigators are currently pursuing charges of making threats against the Afghan national. Because the attack took place at a railway station, federal police are also involved in the investigation alongside local authorities.
Exclusive footage obtained by Junge Freiheit shows the Afghan man advancing on passersby with a drawn knife, making stabbing motions toward a man’s back, and pursuing his intended victims.
Suspect Already Disruptive on Train Before Attack
A witness told Junge Freiheit that the Afghan asylum seeker had already exhibited disturbing behavior while on the train, speaking incoherently on his phone and causing a disturbance. When a ticket inspector asked him to leave the carriage, he allegedly shoved her. When another conductor came to assist, the Afghan man reportedly pulled out a blade approximately 15 centimeters in length.
Schoolchildren Forced to Seek Shelter
The witness described how a group of schoolchildren fled from the train and sought refuge in a local bakery. Police arrived within minutes after an emergency call was placed. Authorities have set up a witness support station at the local elementary school gymnasium to take statements and determine who was threatened and pursued by the attacker.
Police indicated to Junge Freiheit that they would provide further details by the afternoon. Questions regarding the man’s exact residency status, how long he has been in Germany, and whether he resides at the Ruhpolding asylum accommodation facility that features a swimming pool could not be answered due to the ongoing investigation.
The incident marks yet another knife attack involving an asylum seeker in Germany, raising continued concerns about public safety and the vetting of individuals granted entry into the country.
