Spanish Far-Left MEP Sings ‘Happy Birthday Mr. Genocide’ to Trump
A far-left Spanish MEP sang "Happy Birthday, Mister Genocide" to President Trump during a European Parliament debate on Middle East peace efforts with EU diplomat Kaja Kallas.
A far-left Spanish member of the European Parliament has sparked controversy after singing a modified version of “Happy Birthday” to President Donald Trump at the European Parliament, branding him “Mister Genocide” during a parliamentary debate on Tuesday.
Irene Montero of the Podemos Party used her speaking time during a debate with the European Union’s top diplomat Kaja Kallas to perform the stunt, according to Breitbart News. The incident occurred as Kallas appeared before the parliament to discuss the EU’s involvement in efforts for peace and stability across the Middle East following President Trump’s announcement of a peace agreement between the United States and Iran’s Islamic regime.
The 38-year-old MEP transformed the traditional birthday song into a political attack, singing “Happy birthday, Mister Genocide” in reference to the American president’s 80th birthday.
Montero directed her criticism at both President Trump and the European Union over the evolving Middle East situation. She questioned what Europe had to celebrate, drawing a bizarre comparison between international diplomacy and mixed martial arts fighter Ilia Topuria, a Georgian-Spanish athlete.

The Podemos representative challenged whether Europe could claim success in preventing genocide, stopping what she termed an illegal attack by the United States and Israel against Iran, or severing ties with Israel. She turned directly to Kallas to ask whether the diplomat was celebrating Trump’s birthday before launching into her musical protest.
Montero previously held the position of Spain’s Equality Minister under socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez from early 2020 until late 2023. She has established herself as a vocal opponent of President Trump’s policies, both domestic and international, as well as his supporters.
In January, a month before the February conflict in Iran began, she addressed the European Parliament calling Trump the “Hitler of the 21st Century” and demanded that Europe isolate the American president and withdraw from NATO. She urged European lawmakers to reject assisting United States military operations against Iran and suggested they look to Canada’s relationship with communist China as an alternative to becoming “Trump’s lackeys.”
Earlier this year, just days after President Trump commenced his second term, Montero labeled him both a “delinquent” and a “fascist” over his border security policies and crackdown on illegal migration. She also expressed dismay at his 2024 presidential election victory, claiming it demonstrated that “giving up on feminism means that sexism wins.”
As Breitbart News reported in February, Montero has publicly acknowledged that the Spanish government’s mass amnesty plans for illegal migrants serve as an electoral strategy designed to “replace” conservative voters with foreigners. Political observers widely expect her to represent Podemos as their prime ministerial candidate in the 2027 general election.
