Parents Warn Against ‘Schools Without Racism’ Project, Anger Minister
A Brandenburg school district has erupted in controversy as parents, led by an AfD member, oppose joining an anti-racism network they claim violates political neutrality requirements.
A local school district in Brandenburg has become a flashpoint in Germany’s ongoing battle over political neutrality in education, as parents clash with administrators over plans to join a nationwide anti-racism network accused of left-wing bias and targeting the Alternative for Germany party.
According to Junge Freiheit, Brandenburg Education Minister Gordon Hoffmann made an unscheduled visit to Bestensee Primary School south of Berlin this week, accompanied by press, to publicly support school leadership’s push to join “School Without Racism – School With Courage.” The network now includes approximately 5,000 schools across Germany that commit to conducting annual projects against all forms of discrimination, particularly racism.
The ministerial intervention came in response to organized parental opposition that has formed under the banner of a “Neutral School Parents’ Initiative.” Around 15 parents have coordinated through a WhatsApp group to voice concerns that the network would import left-wing ideology into their children’s education.
AfD Father Leads Opposition Campaign
The resistance is spearheaded by a father who is an AfD member, though he emphasizes he is acting in his capacity as a parent of a student at the school. The father told Junge Freiheit that other initiative supporters have no party affiliation. He has spent months presenting detailed concerns to both school and district authorities, including alternative project proposals focused on what he describes as an existing bullying problem at the school.
The parent clarified that his opposition is not to combating racism itself, but rather to what he characterizes as the network’s systematic violation of political neutrality requirements. He has compiled extensive documentation arguing that “School Without Racism – School With Courage” structurally and programmatically breaches neutrality obligations.
Network Explicitly Opposes AfD Participation
Evidence presented by critics includes a January publication on the network’s website under the hashtag “#wirsindnichtneutral” (we are not neutral) that explicitly supports schools refusing to invite AfD politicians to panel discussions. The post poses the question whether schools must invite the AfD, then states the answer is no, there is no obligation to extend such invitations.
The network’s online shop sells posters unmistakably targeting the AfD, including one showing a shark fin emerging from water with the caption “Recognize Racism.” The fin appears in red against a blue background, mirroring the AfD’s logo colors.
Partnerships With Left-Wing Organizations
The anti-racism network maintains cooperative relationships with numerous left-leaning non-governmental organizations that can assist participating schools with projects. Berlin partners include the Amadeu Antonio Foundation, while Brandenburg collaborators feature the Kurt Löwenstein Youth Education Center, an institution affiliated with “Die Falken,” the socialist youth organization recently exposed by Junge Freiheit for multiple cases involving early sexualization of children.
Critics also point to the network’s consistent use of gender-neutral language throughout its materials as evidence of ideological positioning. A 2016 handbook for elementary grades asserts that more than two genders exist. The concerned father argues this constitutes a politically charged linguistic form that advances a specific worldview.
Claims of Classroom Indoctrination
The parent described incidents he believes demonstrate existing political bias at the school. His daughter once came home conveying the message that she could decide to be male. On another occasion, she reported that a teacher had characterized AfD supporters as bad people. While the teacher later disputed making the statement in precisely that form, the father emphasized the significance lies in how the message was received by his child.
He warned that school affiliation with the network would function as a de facto governmental seal of approval, lending state authority to what he considers a politically one-sided organization.
Officials Unanimously Dismiss Concerns
The school, district education office, and Minister Hoffmann have collectively rejected the parental concerns. In written communication to the father obtained by Junge Freiheit, the education office argued that joining “School Without Racism” does not violate school neutrality. Officials contended that the Beutelsbach Consensus, which prohibits political indoctrination in schools, specifically does not require ignoring democratic controversies or maintaining neutrality toward anti-constitutional tendencies.
However, authorities did not directly address the specific examples cited by parents as grounds for their apprehension. The school community is proceeding with a vote this week among staff and students on network membership. If 70 percent of participants support the measure, Bestensee Primary School will officially become a “School Without Racism.”
The Brandenburg controversy reflects broader tensions throughout Germany over the boundaries between legitimate civic education and partisan political activism in public schools, particularly regarding treatment of the country’s largest opposition party.
