Donald Trump Drastically Escalates Pressure on Iran, Announcing Immediate US Navy Blockade of the Strait of Hormuz
Donald Trump sharply intensifies pressure on Iran, announcing that the US Navy will immediately begin a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, while reiterating that Tehran will never acquire nuclear weapons.
In an interview with Fox News, the American president was clear: it will not take long to “clear” the Strait. NATO and other countries, he said, will stand alongside the US in this operation.
At the same time, Trump issued an order for a full naval blockade in an angry post on Truth Social.
According to him, the US will block every ship entering or leaving the Strait of Hormuz and will intercept those paying “passage fees” to Iran in international waters. The decision was made after the failure of lengthy talks held in Islamabad, Pakistan.
Failed Negotiations in Pakistan
Trump was thoroughly briefed by Vice President J.D. Vance, special envoy Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner on the meeting that lasted nearly 20 hours. It is worth noting, however, that progress was made on many issues.
Iran, however, refused (for the time being) to abandon its nuclear aspirations. “Iran will never get nuclear weapons,” the president emphasized, reiterating that the country had not agreed to open the international maritime corridor as promised.
In the same post, Trump described the situation as a “global extortion” and ordered the Navy to locate and destroy mines reportedly laid by Iran. He warned that any Iranian action against American or peaceful ships would be met with a decisive response.
And Suddenly… Putin Offers to Mediate
Vladimir Putin declared himself ready to take on the role of mediator in the Middle East conflict, immediately after the collapse of negotiations between the United States and Iran.
From Moscow’s side, the Russian president initiated contact with his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian. During their phone conversation, Putin expressed his intention to actively assist in seeking a political solution.
According to the statement from the Iranian side, Putin stressed that Russia is willing to continue facilitating efforts and to serve as a mediator. The goal remains achieving a just and sustainable peace in the region.
The Russian Initiative
This move comes at a time when direct talks between Washington and Tehran have broken down. Putin appears to be taking advantage of the resulting vacuum by offering Russian support at the diplomatic level.
So far, the response of the American side to this proposal is unknown. However, Moscow traditionally maintains good relations with Tehran and aims to strengthen its role as a key player in Middle Eastern developments.
Focus on Political Settlement
In their conversation, the Russian president reiterated the need for a political and diplomatic way out of the crisis. Military options were not mentioned, but exclusively negotiations that will lead to stable peace.
This development is recorded while tensions in the region remain high and many parties are seeking ways to de-escalate. The Russian proposal opens a new communication channel, although its outcome remains uncertain.
New Incidents of Tension
Alongside developments in the Strait of Hormuz, new incidents were reported in the wider area. Armed men in a boat approached a vessel 54 nautical miles southwest of the port of Hodeidah in Yemen. The British UKMTO service reported that the boat withdrew after the ship’s captain fired a flare.
In southern Lebanon, an infant under two years old lost his life due to an Israeli strike in the village of Srifeh. The child was with relatives who had returned to the village for the funeral of his seven-year-old sister, who had been killed in a previous strike on the first day of the US-Iran ceasefire. The family received the baby’s body in Tyre, where relatives spoke of a tragic story “born in war and dead in war.”
