Greece Files Complaint Over Turkish Threats to Marine Parks
Greece formally protested Turkey's objections to Greek Aegean regulations and Turkish decrees establishing marine parks in contested waters that Athens says violate its sovereignty.
According to Vassilis Nedos writing in Kathimerini (EN), Athens delivered the official complaint through its embassy in Ankara to the Turkish Foreign Ministry. When Greek diplomats presented the formal demarche, Turkish officials responded by reiterating what Athens characterized as unfounded territorial claims that had already been aired publicly.
Diplomatic sources in Athens made clear that Greece categorically dismisses Turkey’s assertions as arbitrary and without legal foundation. The sources emphasized that matters of sovereignty throughout the Aegean have been clearly and definitively established by relevant international treaties.
Turkish Marine Park Declarations Rejected
Greece has also refused to recognize the legitimacy of Turkey’s newly declared national marine parks, insofar as they extend beyond Turkish jurisdiction and encroach upon what Athens maintains is Greek continental shelf territory.
The dispute reflects ongoing tensions between the two NATO allies over maritime boundaries, energy rights, and territorial waters in the eastern Mediterranean. Turkey’s August 15 decrees establishing the marine parks represent the latest in a series of unilateral actions that Greece views as provocations designed to challenge established international legal frameworks.
Athens Vows Continued International Engagement
Greek diplomatic sources indicated that Athens will persist in drawing the attention of its European Union and broader international partners to any unilateral Turkish actions that violate international law and infringe upon Greek sovereignty and sovereign rights.
The exchange underscores the fragile state of Greek-Turkish relations despite periodic attempts at dialogue between the neighboring countries, which continue to clash over longstanding disagreements in the Aegean and eastern Mediterranean regions.
