Sophie Cunningham: Summer’s Anti-Woke Star

According to Causeur, Sophie Cunningham of the Indiana Fever has emerged as what the French outlet calls the anti-woke star of the summer, following a series of incidents that have thrust the blonde athlete into the center of America’s ongoing culture wars.

The controversy began on June 22 during a game between the Fever and Phoenix Mercury. Cunningham pointed at opposing player DeWanna Bonner for several seconds after Bonner targeted Cunningham’s teammate Caitlin Clark. The gesture quickly went viral on social media and became a meme, with some interpreting the accusatory finger as a stand against wokeness or even a response to the Black Lives Matter movement’s knee-taking protests.

Flagrant Foul Sparks Race Card

The situation escalated on August 8 when Cunningham was on the receiving end of a flagrant elbow from DiJonai Carrington of the Chicago Sky. After being ejected from the game for the obvious foul, Carrington refused to accept responsibility and instead took to social media with a brief but loaded message: “white privilege.”

Cunningham responded directly to the race-baiting attack. She explained that the incident had nothing to do with skin color, noting that she had committed a similar foul the previous year and was also ejected. She stated it was deserved and there was no reason to advance such an argument.

As Causeur reports, the real white privilege today may well be the privilege of being attacked on sports courts and in the streets, then being blamed for it.

Standing Firm on Women’s Sports

Adding fuel to the fire, Cunningham stated in an interview recorded in March and aired in late July on ESPN that young girls in sport should not have to compete against biological males. These comments, which would seem to reflect basic common sense, triggered a wave of outrage and indignant reactions from the progressive sports establishment.

Stefanie Dolson, a player for the Seattle Storm, responded by prominently wearing a pro-transgender t-shirt. The backlash illustrated once again how stating biological reality has become controversial in modern sports.

Cunningham is not alone in her position. Tennis world number one Aryna Sabalenka recently expressed support for femininity testing imposed by the WTA, suggesting that elite female athletes increasingly recognize the unfairness of allowing biological males to compete in women’s categories.

Focus on the Game

In an effort to lower the temperature, Cunningham has indicated she wants to focus on her team’s performance. The Indiana Fever currently sits in a promising fifth place in the WNBA standings.

Much like actress Sydney Sweeney a year ago, Cunningham has won the title of anti-woke star of the summer simply by refusing to apologize for defending her teammates and standing up for fairness in women’s sports. Her willingness to speak plainly in an era of enforced conformity has made her a symbol of resistance to the excesses of identity politics in American athletics.
