Farage Set to Win Second Clacton By-Election Despite Tory-Labour Alliance
New polling shows Nigel Farage would retain his Clacton seat even if Labour stood aside for Conservatives in a potential by-election triggered by a donation probe.
The Reform UK leader, who secured a commanding 12,784-vote majority in last week’s contest, faces the prospect of returning to the ballot box later this year following an investigation into a £5 million donation from Thai-based billionaire Christopher Harborne.
According to Jack Walters writing in GB News, Conservative Party operatives have begun strategizing on how to challenge Farage in the seaside constituency that was once a Tory stronghold. Party leader Kemi Badenoch is currently searching for a candidate capable of mounting a serious challenge to the Reform UK figurehead.
Conservative sources have reportedly approached Labour about a possible electoral pact, applying pressure to Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham to withdraw from any potential contest in order to consolidate the anti-Farage vote.
Despite these behind-the-scenes maneuvers, fresh analysis from Electoral Calculus suggests such efforts would prove futile. The data, which draws on current national polling figures and was shared exclusively with the news outlet, indicates Farage would secure victory even facing a unified establishment candidate.
The analysis places Farage’s support at 44 per cent in Clacton, with the Conservatives trailing significantly at 22 per cent. Labour registers just 12 per cent backing, while the Liberal Democrats stand at seven per cent and the Greens at four per cent.
Electoral Calculus found that while most Labour, Liberal Democrat and Green voters would likely transfer their support to a Conservative candidate in a head-to-head contest with Farage, a portion would nonetheless back the Reform UK leader. This fragmentation appears sufficient to guarantee Farage another victory, even in the face of what some have characterized as a desperate establishment alliance.
The prospect of a second by-election in Clacton stems from ongoing scrutiny of Reform UK’s finances, specifically the substantial donation from Harborne. The investigation could trigger fresh electoral proceedings in the constituency, which Farage only recently captured from the Conservatives.
The polling data underscores the difficulty facing traditional parties in countering Reform UK’s momentum, particularly in seats where Farage has established a personal electoral base. Conservative strategists had hoped that consolidating opposition support might provide a pathway to reclaiming the seat, but the numbers suggest voters remain firmly in Farage’s camp.
