A Spanish F-18 fighter jet operating under NATO command has shot down a drone over Romanian airspace near the Moldovan border, marking the fourth such interception over the country this year as incursions linked to Russia’s war in Ukraine continue to threaten allied territory.

The unmanned aircraft was detected by radar at 4:44 a.m. on August 16 approximately 24 kilometers north of Galați, according to Brussels Signal. The drone had entered Romanian airspace from neighboring Moldova.

A Spanish Air and Space Force F-18, conducting a combat air patrol from the 57th Air Base at Mihail Kogălniceanu, established radar contact with the intruding aircraft and received authorization to engage. The drone was destroyed at 5:01 a.m. over uninhabited terrain, with debris reportedly falling between the villages of Băleni and Cudalbi in Galați county, close to the Ukrainian frontier.

While Romanian authorities did not publicly identify the origin of the drone, NATO was more forthcoming. Colonel Martin O’Donnell, a spokesman for the alliance’s military headquarters, confirmed that although details remain under investigation, the drone appears to be Russian.

Acting Defense Minister Radu Miruță praised both the Spanish pilots and Romanian command center personnel, emphasizing that Romania was actively defending its airspace. He stated that vigilance, rapid response, and allied solidarity provide concrete guarantees of national security.

Miruță underscored Romania’s position on the front line of European defense, citing the nation’s 614-kilometer land border with Ukraine. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in 2022, Bucharest has documented repeated airspace violations, alongside sea mines drifting across critical Black Sea trade and energy corridors.

This marks the fourth drone destruction over Romanian territory in 2026. Romanian F-16s shot down three drones in late July over a three-day period—the first time the country had engaged intruding aircraft—following parliamentary approval of legislation authorizing the military to destroy or neutralize such threats.

Romania summoned the Russian ambassador after those July incidents. The most serious violation occurred on May 29, when a Russian drone struck an apartment building in Galați, injuring two civilians. That attack prompted NATO to reaffirm its readiness to defend every inch of allied territory.

Sunday’s operation was coordinated through NATO’s Combined Air Operations Centre at Torrejón, located near Madrid.

As a member of both NATO and the European Union, Romania’s ongoing airspace violations have reinforced arguments in Brussels for the proposed “drone wall” along the bloc’s eastern borders. The European Commission has committed to making the counter-drone initiative fully operational by the end of 2027.
