Exclusive: How Antifa Attacked Pro-Life Activists in Göttingen

Left-wing extremists violently attacked police officers in Göttingen on Saturday as they attempted to break through a security cordon protecting participants at a pro-life demonstration. Twelve officers sustained chemical irritant injuries as radical counter-protesters used force against law enforcement in chaotic scenes captured on video.

The incident unfolded as student pro-life organization “Tradition, Family and Private Property” (TFP) held a peaceful prayer rally on Göttingen’s market square under the motto “Public Rosary Against Abortion,” according to Junge Freiheit. The forty-two participants prayed, distributed leaflets, and were accompanied by a small musical group with trumpets and bagpipes.

Marco Hildebrand, spokesman for the TFP student action group, described the dramatic moments to Junge Freiheit. His account is corroborated by continuous 360-degree camera footage obtained by the publication, which documents the chaotic minutes as police shielded the pro-life demonstrators from the charging counter-protest.

The left-wing extremists exerted “considerable pressure” on officers and used violence against security forces, according to police statements. Multiple ambulances were deployed to treat the injured officers. Law enforcement was forced to use direct coercion approximately two hundred times, pushing back attackers and deploying pepper spray. Only these measures prevented direct confrontation between the groups.

Green Party Banner Visible Among Antifa Activists

The trouble began early when pro-life activists distributing flyers were subjected to verbal abuse, obscene gestures, and physical shoving. After approximately twenty minutes, counter-demonstrators appeared carrying banners and Antifa flags. Hildebrand estimated their number at between one hundred twenty and one hundred forty, though police described the counter-protest as spontaneous and said they had received no concrete advance warning of a planned counter-demonstration.

Video footage obtained by Junge Freiheit shows a Green Party banner among the black-clad Antifa activists. Whether the party was officially involved in the counter-protest remains unclear. Hildebrand reported that when the pro-life group prepared to leave, the green flag was quickly hidden, but those who had been behind it continued to advance aggressively toward the demonstrators.

Noise Devices Containing Nails and Glass Shards

During the rally, counter-demonstrators attempted to drown out prayers and speeches with shouts, music, and specially brought noise-making devices. One such device accidentally opened, spilling glass shards and nails, according to the pro-life spokesman.

Police confirmed the registered assembly proceeded peacefully until its scheduled end. The situation grew increasingly tense due to the “loud disruptions” from counter-protesters. Escalation occurred around six o’clock in the evening as the pro-life participants, under police escort, attempted to reach their vehicles.

A larger group of counter-demonstrators then mobilized. The complete video shows the police cordon and repeated attempts by left-wing activists to break through toward the rally participants. The police officers were attacked, Hildebrand told Junge Freiheit. He noted that at times members of his group stood alongside officers helping to push back attackers because security forces were barely managing the onslaught.

Escorted to Safety Under Police Protection

The encircled pro-life demonstrators eventually chanted “We want freedom” as they were escorted under police protection to their vehicles in a parking garage. Hildebrand described the difficulty of identifying individual attackers for criminal charges when confronted by over one hundred twenty people intent on violence.

The incident highlights the growing willingness of left-wing extremist groups to use physical force against peaceful conservative and Christian gatherings in German cities. Police deployment of pepper spray and physical barriers proved essential in preventing what could have been a far more serious violent confrontation on the streets of Göttingen.
