Berlin Mayor Pushes Islamic Education in Schools to Prevent Radicalization
Berlin's mayor proposes state-controlled Islamic instruction in public schools to counter mosque radicalization following a deadly Islamist terror attack at the city's Pride event.
Kai Wegner, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) Mayor of Berlin, announced his support for Islamic religious education in state schools in response to the Islamist terror attack that claimed one life and injured multiple others at the Berlin CSD Pride march, according to Nius.
Wegner stated that young people are repeatedly radicalized through contact with extremist religious figures in so-called backyard mosques. He argued that religious instruction within state schools could provide substantial protection for youth against such influences.
The mayor’s proposal centers on bringing Islamic teaching under state control and supervision. By incorporating Islamic instruction into the public school system, authorities would gain oversight of the religious education being provided to Muslim students, according to the CDU politician.
Wegner emphasized that radicalization tendencies exist in some Berlin mosques, though he was careful to note not all Islamic places of worship present this problem. His plan aims to counter extremist influence by offering an alternative to unsupervised religious instruction.
The mayor simultaneously called for intensified action against Islamist institutions, demanding increased pressure and monitoring of radical mosques with the ultimate goal of prohibiting them entirely.
The terrorist who attacked the CSD Berlin event on Saturday had been educated in the Berlin school system. He killed one person and wounded many others in what has been confirmed as an Islamist attack.
This proposal is not entirely new to Berlin politics. The CDU and Social Democratic Party (SPD) coalition government had already agreed in their 2023 coalition agreement to introduce an elective-compulsory subject covering worldviews and religions. However, the initiative has yet to be implemented. Currently, participation in religious instruction remains voluntary in Berlin schools.
On Tuesday, Wegner acknowledged the state’s limitations in monitoring known threat actors. This admission came after Nius questioned how two individuals under surveillance had managed to escape observation.
The debate over state-controlled Islamic education reflects broader concerns about radicalization pathways in Germany, particularly among young people exposed to extremist interpretations of Islam outside official oversight. Proponents argue that professionally trained teachers operating within a state curriculum could present moderate interpretations while authorities maintain visibility over religious instruction content.
Critics of unregulated mosque education point to repeated cases where individuals have been radicalized in unsupervised religious settings, leading to security concerns and terrorist incidents.
