Catholic Shrine Attacked Days Before Major Youth Festival
A suspect has been arrested in Bosnia after vandalism at the Medjugorje pilgrimage site, including spray-painting a Virgin Mary statue days before a major youth festival.
The vandalism included black spray paint covering the face of a statue of the Virgin Mary located on Apparition Hill, as well as offensive graffiti scrawled on the statue’s pedestal reading “devil in a skirt,” according to The European Conservative. Additional graffiti in Polish and English appeared to target individuals linked to the reported visions at the site.
Security footage aired by Jabuka TV also captured a man setting fire to an outdoor altar at the nearby St James Church. Bosnian police confirmed on Tuesday that a person connected to the incidents had been located and arrested in the Medjugorje area, though his identity and nationality have not yet been disclosed.
Annual Youth Festival Set to Proceed
The timing of the attacks is particularly significant, coming just days ahead of Medjugorje’s annual youth prayer festival, which draws more than 50,000 pilgrims from across the globe. Parish officials stated that repair work is already underway and confirmed the event will go forward as scheduled.
Medjugorje, situated approximately 140 kilometres southwest of Sarajevo, emerged as a major Catholic pilgrimage destination following reports in 1981 that six young people witnessed apparitions of the Virgin Mary. The site now attracts over one million visitors annually to Apparition Hill.
Vatican Recognition and Response
In 2024, the Vatican formally authorized devotion at Medjugorje, though it stopped short of declaring the alleged apparitions definitively supernatural in origin. The move nonetheless represented significant ecclesiastical recognition for the site.
The parish responded to the vandalism by calling on Catholics to answer with “prayer, fasting, and forgiveness.” Bosnia’s Interreligious Council issued a statement condemning the incidents as an assault on peace and religious tolerance.
The arrest comes as authorities work to ensure security for the upcoming festival, which represents one of the largest annual gatherings of young Catholics in Europe.
