51 Dead or Missing After Migrant Boat Capsizes Off Libya
At least 51 migrants died or went missing after their boat capsized off Libya's coast on June 12 while attempting to reach Europe, with only ten survivors rescued.
The shipwreck occurred on June 12 in Mediterranean waters off the eastern coast of the North African nation. Only ten migrants survived the disaster, while eleven bodies have been recovered and 40 people remain unaccounted for, the Abreen group reported on Friday.
Libya’s eastern coastline continues to serve as a primary launch point for migrants from across North Africa and beyond who seek to reach European territory. Smuggling networks routinely pack desperate travelers into dangerously small and unseaworthy vessels for the treacherous Mediterranean crossing.
Libyan coast guard units and Red Crescent personnel in Tobruk recovered bodies that began washing ashore in recent days. Coast guard officials released video footage showing rescue teams transporting remains in body bags from the water.
The International Organization for Migration documented more than 800 migrant deaths or disappearances along the central Mediterranean route between January 1 and May 16 of this year alone. The previous year saw over 1,300 migrants killed or reported missing on the same passage.
Libya has become the predominant transit hub for migrants escaping conflict and economic hardship across Africa and the Middle East. The country descended into prolonged instability following the 2011 NATO-supported rebellion that overthrew and resulted in the death of longtime ruler Moammar Gadhafi.
Human trafficking operations have exploited Libya’s chaotic security environment and porous borders, which the country shares with six neighboring states. Criminal smuggling networks force migrants onto overcrowded and inadequately equipped boats, including inflatable rubber craft entirely unsuitable for open sea voyages.
Migrants intercepted at sea and returned to Libya face detention in government-operated facilities where systematic abuses occur. UN-appointed investigators have documented forced labor, physical violence, sexual assault, and torture in these centers—violations that investigators say constitute crimes against humanity.
