46-year-old arrested in London over Marfin case returning to Greece
A 46-year-old woman wanted for the 2010 Marfin Bank arson in Greece that killed three people was arrested at London's Gatwick Airport while boarding a flight to Greece.
Circumstances of the Arrest
The woman, who has been permanently residing in Brighton for the past six years and is the mother of two children, had already expressed her intention to return to Greece. According to reports, she had contacted Greek authorities days earlier, declaring her innocence and expressing her desire to appear before the investigating magistrate.
The arrest was activated following the issuance of an Interpol red notice, approved by the prosecutor last Saturday, July 11. The accused now faces extradition proceedings to Greece in order to answer to the charges against her.
Background of the Tragedy
The case concerns the deadly arson attack on Marfin Bank on Stadiou Street on May 5, 2010, during demonstrations against the first memorandum. Three bank employees lost their lives in the fire caused by Molotov cocktail attacks, including a pregnant woman, while dozens of others were in serious danger.
In relation to the same case, two 42-year-olds have already been arrested, who are being prosecuted for serial premeditated murder. The suspects are expected to testify before the investigating magistrate on Tuesday, July 14. The arrest of the 46-year-old at London’s airport represents a significant development in the years-long judicial investigation to hold those responsible for the crime accountable.
