What the Mirage Installation with SCALP Missiles in Karpathos Means

Turkey claims Greece's Patriot withdrawal from Karpathos as a retreat, yet the deployment of Mirage jets armed with long-range stealth SCALP missiles redefines deterrence, complicating Ankara’s response.

Ankara Celebrates the Withdrawal of the Patriots. In Turkey, the withdrawal of the Patriots from Karpathos is portrayed as a strategic retreat by Greece. The reality shows a different approach to deterrence.

The redeployment of the Mirage 2000-5 jets in the area radically changes the situation. The French fighters do not provide a static defensive presence like the Patriots but operate as flexible rapid reaction forces, capable of ensuring air superiority and strategic strike.

At the same time, the Mirages have the capability to carry SCALP EG missiles. The Greek variants of these cruise missiles have a range of about 300 kilometers, allowing strikes deep into the hinterland without the aircraft needing to enter dangerous zones.

The SCALP missiles fly at extremely low altitudes, feature stealth characteristics, and can hit critical targets such as airports, command centers, radars, and other high-value infrastructure. This makes the Mirages a strategic deterrent tool, not merely an interception asset.

For this reason, many analysts argue that the discussion in Turkey focuses exclusively on the withdrawal of the Patriots, as the presence of the Mirages armed with SCALP presents much more complex operational challenges for Ankara.
