Ukraine Warns Russia Planning New Offensive on Kyiv
Ukrainian officials warn Russia may be preparing a ground offensive targeting Kyiv and Chernihiv despite no current troop mobilization evidence.
Pavlo Palisa, deputy head of the Ukrainian president’s office, informed reporters that while no evidence yet indicates Russian troops are actively mobilizing for such an assault, Ukrainian intelligence assessments suggest Moscow is preparing for potential offensive operations in these two northern population centers, as Molly Parks reports in the Washington Examiner.
According to translated remarks, Palisa emphasized that the priority task for us is to prevent the creation of conditions for the Russians to conduct any offensive actions whatsoever in the region.
The warning emerges amid a frozen state of peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. In a devastating overnight strike, Russian forces conducted one of 2026’s deadliest aerial assaults on Ukraine, killing no fewer than 37 people in an airstrike just west of the capital Kyiv.
NATO Allies Sound Alarm on Russian Escalation
Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk, whose nation has itself experienced Russian drone violations of its airspace, disclosed Saturday that he had discussed the Russia-Ukraine conflict with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
In a social media post, Tusk stated that Russian escalation is advancing as he has repeatedly cautioned, and that Ukraine requires enhanced air defense capabilities critical not only for Ukrainian security but for the broader region. He declared the coming six months will prove decisive, warning that Poland and NATO must prepare for multiple contingencies and cannot discount the possibility of Russian provocations against a NATO member state.
Trump Dismisses NATO Attack Concerns
These warnings arrive in the wake of remarks President Donald Trump delivered from the Oval Office this week, in which he expressed confidence that Russian President Vladimir Putin would not launch military action against NATO territory.
Trump told reporters during an Oval Office event that he has maintained productive conversations with Putin, adding that the Russian leader will not be attacking any NATO member.
CIA Director Conducts Rare Moscow Visit
CIA Director John Ratcliffe traveled to Russia this week for senior-level discussions with Kremlin intelligence officials. While many specifics of the engagement remain undisclosed, Ratcliffe reportedly delivered warnings to Putin against any attack on NATO countries.
The trip marked Ratcliffe’s inaugural visit to Russia and represents the first confirmed CIA director journey to the country since Biden administration chief Bill Burns traveled there in late 2021, shortly before Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, according to Bloomberg reporting.
