Trump Holds Private Meeting with Zelensky
President Trump confirmed he will meet one-on-one with Ukrainian President Zelensky on Tuesday following French efforts to arrange talks amid European pressure for a peace deal.
The development follows French President Emmanuel Macron‘s pledge to Zelensky that he would work to arrange a private meeting with the American president. Those efforts appear to have borne fruit.
I’m meeting him later on today, Trump said when asked about the Ukrainian president.
The announcement came after Trump participated in a group meeting with Zelensky and fellow G7 leaders Tuesday morning. European leaders are pressing for an end to the war in Ukraine and seeking American support for a peace agreement aligned with Ukrainian priorities.
Trump appeared to adopt that framework when he called on Russia to pursue a diplomatic resolution.
The president noted that both nations have suffered catastrophic losses, stating that Russia should make a deal and acknowledging the tremendous casualties sustained by both Russian and Ukrainian forces.
The impromptu bilateral meeting represents a significant moment in diplomatic efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict, with European allies clearly hoping American pressure will help bring Moscow to the negotiating table on terms favorable to Kyiv.
