With a strong presence of institutional bodies and citizens from across Thrace, the proceedings took place for the case of assault against the former Acting Mufti of Komotini, Dr. Tzihat Halil, at the Platanos (Tçinar) mosque in Xanthi, an incident that had provoked strong reactions in the local community.

At the courthouse were representatives of the Muftis of Thrace, members of DEMP, religious teachers, as well as a crowd of Muslim and Christian citizens from Xanthi, Komotini, and Evros, expressing their support for Dr. Tzihat Halil and sending a message in favor of social cohesion, religious peace, and harmonious coexistence in the region.

The trial of the case did not proceed, as a new postponement was granted following a request by the defendants’ side, which marked the second consecutive postponement of this particular case. June 18th was set as the new date for the trial of the case.

Despite this development, those present emphasized that the process demonstrates the respect the Greek state provides for the rights of the accused and for ensuring a fair trial, within the framework of democratic functioning and the rule of law.

At the same time, those gathered pointed out that they will continue to monitor the progress of the case, expressing their trust in Justice and emphasizing that, regardless of any postponements that may arise, the Law will be applied and the case will be pursued to its conclusion.

The incident at the Platanos mosque had caused particular concern, as it had occurred upon Dr. Tzihat Halil’s arrival at the place of worship to perform prayer, resulting in strong reactions from religious and social bodies of Thrace.

The massive presence of citizens and representatives of bodies at the court proceedings was considered by many as a clear reminder that Thrace continues to defend unity, mutual respect, and the peaceful coexistence of all its inhabitants.
