The Narrative of “Anti-Muslim Racism” Under Scrutiny
A German talk show revealed evidence that Islamist organizations have infiltrated major political parties through voter-exchange arrangements, with one case involving removal from an intelligence report.
During a recent edition of the popular Markus Lanz show, according to Junge Freiheit, integration commissioner Güner Balci and investigative journalist Konrad Adamek presented detailed evidence of systematic infiltration by Islamist actors into German political structures, particularly within the Social Democratic Party and the Greens.
Balci, who serves as integration commissioner for the Berlin district of Neukölln, has previously documented cases of Islamist penetration of German parties and government offices. She described a troubling pattern whereby politicians meet with known Islamists in exchange for promised voter support from mosque communities. The deal is that direct, Balci explained, noting that some actors state this arrangement explicitly.
The Focus journalist Adamek corroborated these findings with his own investigative research. He identified the Muslim Brotherhood as a key organization that has successfully infiltrated both the SPD and the Greens. While “infiltration” is a strong word, Adamek concluded, it nevertheless corresponds to the truth.
Islamist Removed from Intelligence Report to Receive State Honor
Among the most striking examples presented was an alleged case involving former Berlin Mayor Michael Müller. According to Adamek’s reporting, an Islamist was purportedly struck from the constitutional protection report following a phone call from Müller’s office, clearing the way for the individual to receive a state merit order.
Balci also pointed to routine examples of fundamentalist practices gaining acceptance in official settings, including gender-segregated seating at Ramadan fast-breaking events organized in the German Bundestag. When Green Party parliamentarian Lamya Kaddor suggested this was “something different,” Balci firmly rejected the distinction.

The discussion became particularly uncomfortable for Kaddor when confronted with a photograph showing Berlin Greens leading candidate Bettina Jarasch in a public embrace with a prominent figure from Berlin’s Islamist scene. Kaddor called the image “irritating” and admitted it was “not clever” to meet and embrace him in such a manner. She then awkwardly deflected responsibility, saying she was not “the Islam police within the Greens.”
For Balci, such incidents exemplify how the Muslim Brotherhood has built structures across Europe and Germany that aim to establish a highly reactionary, ultra-conservative political understanding of Islam as the normal standard.
The Weaponization of “Anti-Muslim Racism”
The program also addressed the controversial concept of “anti-Muslim racism” itself. Host Markus Lanz expressed confusion over the term, asking what racism could possibly mean in relation to a religion. Khola Hübsch, a headscarf-wearing Muslim activist with the Ahmadiyya community, claimed it refers to people “read as Muslim” suffering from structural discrimination.
Balci countered that the racism accusation is deployed whenever criticism is directed at fundamentalist activities by Muslims. She cited numerous examples ranging from child marriages in Germany—whose exact number remains unknown because authorities apparently prefer not to know—to strict gender segregation and homophobia, including within Hübsch’s own community.
Adamek reported on proven falsifications in the counting of alleged anti-Muslim incidents by so-called reporting centers, fabricated data that has nevertheless found its way into official statistics. This directly contradicted claims by Kaddor, who had cited those very statistics as evidence of racism.

The extent of this ideological accommodation was illustrated by a resolution passed in April of last year by the Berlin regional conference of the Young Socialists. The Jusos decided the word “Islamism” should no longer be used because it creates stigmatization for many believers and leads to regular experiences of racism.

Lanz, visibly shaken by the litany of examples, closed the program with a personal account from his recent travels in Syria. Syrians had repeatedly told him they could not believe who Germany had allowed into the country, calling the decisions completely insane. People in Syria reported encountering the same individuals they had fled from now living in Germany.
The broadcast highlighted growing tensions over how Western nations address Islamist infiltration without being accused of bigotry—a dilemma that appears to paralyze establishment politicians even as evidence of systematic influence operations mounts.
