The Russian military deployed 73 missiles and 656 drones in strikes across multiple Ukrainian cities, according to New York Post, targeting the capital Kyiv alongside the central city of Dnipro and eastern population centers including Poltava, Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia. Ukrainian air defense systems managed to destroy or suppress 40 missiles and 602 drones during the massive barrage.

The country’s air force recorded direct hits from 30 ballistic missiles, three cruise missiles and 33 drones at no fewer than 38 locations, while debris from intercepted drones fell across 15 additional sites.

Kyiv Bears Heavy Casualties

Ukraine’s state emergency service reported at least four fatalities in Kyiv, with 63 people wounded including three children. Residential buildings and civilian infrastructure sustained damage across eight of the capital’s districts.

In the Podilskyi district, a nine-story building suffered partial destruction to its upper floors, trapping residents beneath collapsed sections. Rescue operations continued into the early morning hours even as air raid warnings remained active.

The Solomianskyi district saw a 20-story building and a 24-story structure sustain significant damage from the strikes.

Second Strike Kills Rescuer in Dnipro

The central Dnipropetrovsk region suffered at least six deaths and 36 injuries after Russian missiles struck the city of Dnipro, according to emergency services. In a particularly brutal tactic, a second strike targeted the same location as first responders arrived on scene, killing one rescue worker.

Olena Dniprovska, 65, and her husband Yevhen, 64, were among those injured in their Kyiv apartment during the attack. Blood-stained and bandaged, Dniprovska recounted the terrifying moments as the blast tore through her home, leaving the apartment completely destroyed with no doors, windows or balcony remaining intact.

Eastern Cities Under Fire

In Kharkiv, at least 14 people sustained injuries as residential homes, garages and vehicles were damaged. A two-story residential building and part of a four-story apartment complex took direct hits, leaving people trapped beneath the rubble of the larger structure.

The sounds of explosions reverberated through affected cities for most of the night and into the early morning. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had warned days earlier that Russia was preparing another mass assault, urging citizens to exercise caution and seek shelter during air raid alerts.

Air Defense Gap Persists

Ukrainian officials continue pressing Western allies for additional air defense missiles to counter Russia’s ballistic missile capabilities. While Ukraine maintains a high interception rate against drone attacks, ballistic missiles represent a persistent and dangerous vulnerability in the country’s defensive systems.
