Russian Missiles Strike Kyiv Cathedral, Kill Nine in Attack
A Russian missile and drone barrage killed at least nine people across Ukraine and ignited a fire at Kyiv's UNESCO-listed Pechersk Lavra monastery, one of Eastern Christianity's holiest sites.
The assault on the UNESCO World Heritage location killed four people and wounded 30 others in the Ukrainian capital alone, according to Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv city military administration, as Brussels Signal reports. Among the injured were a pregnant woman and two children aged five and six.
Emergency services reported that approximately 800 square metres of the cathedral’s roof sustained fire damage, with a separate blaze erupting at a nearby national arts and museum complex. The Pechersk Lavra, founded in 1051 and known as the Monastery of the Caves, was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage in Danger list in 2023.
Zelensky Condemns Attack on Christian Heritage
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky characterized the strike as one of Russia’s most egregious assaults on Christian culture to date. Metropolitan Epiphanius, head of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, denounced the bombing as another Russian crime against humanity, history, and Christianity, calling for prayers to preserve the sacred site.
In the northeastern city of Kharkiv, five State Emergency Service rescuers lost their lives when a second Russian strike targeted them while they were extinguishing fires from an earlier attack, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko confirmed. Five additional emergency workers sustained injuries.
Massive Scale of Russian Bombardment
Ukraine’s Air Force documented a staggering scale of aggression, reporting that Russian forces launched 70 missiles and 611 drones overnight. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted 50 missiles and 582 drones, according to Brussels Signal. The weapons deployed included Zircon anti-ship missiles, Iskander ballistic missiles, and Kh-101 cruise missiles.
Russia’s Defence Ministry claimed it conducted a massive strike using long-range precision weapons against military and defense industry targets in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Dnipropetrovsk. Moscow framed the attack as retaliation for Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory, a justification Kyiv firmly rejects.
Infrastructure Damage and Diplomatic Timing
The bombardment left approximately 140,000 households in northern Kyiv without electricity, Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko reported.
The timing of the attack is significant, coming after Zelensky disclosed he had spoken with United States President Donald Trump about ending the more than four-year war. A Group of Seven summit is scheduled to convene in France this week. Ukrainian officials announced they would press UNESCO and other international bodies for a response to the damage inflicted on the protected heritage site.
