Raskin dismisses Hasan Piker’s pro-Hamas views as distraction

Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland defended his decision to continue campaigning alongside candidates linked to Hasan Piker, the progressive Twitch streamer who recently declared he would vote for Hamas over Israel every single time, according to David Zimmermann writing in Washington Examiner.

Piker’s inflammatory remarks about the terrorist organization responsible for the October 7, 2023 attacks on Israel have sparked outrage within Democratic circles, with some lawmakers publicly distancing themselves from candidates associated with him. Yet Raskin appears unwilling to let the controversy derail his party’s midterm strategy.

Speaking on NBC’s Meet the Press, Raskin told host Kristen Welker he was unsure whether Piker even identifies as a Democrat, noting the commentator had criticized the Jewish congressman for campaigning with Abdul el Sayed and other Democratic candidates in Michigan.

Raskin acknowledged that nobody supports Hamas, describing it as a terrorist organization that brutally attacked Israel, but insisted voters also oppose the policies of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He emphasized these issues cannot be resolved before the midterms and argued Democrats should focus on President Donald Trump and his policies instead.

Democratic Split Over Hamas Sympathizer

The controversy has exposed fractures within the Democratic coalition. Rep. Hillary Scholten of Michigan publicly denounced Piker and withheld her endorsement of el Sayed, the Democratic Senate nominee in Michigan, specifically because of his association with the internet personality.

El Sayed has attempted to create distance from Piker, though the two remain closely linked through their anti-Israel positions and have appeared together at multiple campaign events early in the 2026 primary cycle.

The Michigan Senate race pits el Sayed, a progressive who has welcomed support from the Democratic Socialists of America, against former Republican Representative Mike Rogers for the state’s open Senate seat this November.

High Stakes Congressional Battle

Democrats are mounting an aggressive campaign to retake both chambers of Congress this fall. Republicans hold only a narrow majority in the House and face significant risk of losing control, while Democrats are simultaneously targeting Senate seats in competitive states like Michigan.

Both Democratic and Republican lawmakers have accused Piker of antisemitism over his repeated critical remarks about Israel and Jewish Americans, making Raskin’s continued association with candidates linked to the commentator a potential liability as the party seeks to expand its electoral coalition.

Piker describes himself as a socialist, placing him further left than el Sayed, who identifies as a progressive but operates within mainstream Democratic politics despite accepting backing from socialist organizations.
