Putin Critic Shot Dead in Poland, Suspect Arrested
Polish authorities detained a foreign national with a Georgian passport for the assassination of Russian dissident artist Robert Kuzovkov, with officials investigating potential foreign intelligence involvement.
The suspect, a 36-year-old man traveling on a Georgian passport, was arrested following Monday’s fatal shooting in the eastern city of Biala Podlaska, near Poland’s border with Belarus. Polish Interior Minister Marcin Kierwi´nski disclosed the arrest during a Warsaw press conference Thursday, noting the individual is believed to have ties to organized crime and is under investigation for additional offenses in Poland dating back to 2022.
The victim, identified as Robert Kuzovkov and known by the pseudonym Semyon Skrepetsky, was gunned down outside his residence. Prosecutors detailed that the assailant fired two initial shots before delivering three more at point-blank range to the head, chest, and back. The 44-year-old Russian dissident died at the scene.
Foreign Intelligence Link Under Investigation
Tomasz Siemoniak, Poland’s security services minister, confirmed that authorities are treating foreign intelligence involvement as a credible possibility. He noted that hostile intelligence agencies have previously recruited criminals to carry out operations abroad, though past incidents in Poland had not escalated to murder.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk declared Wednesday that the circumstances point overwhelmingly to a political assassination. He stated that if Russian involvement is confirmed, the act would constitute state terrorism and represent a grave international matter, as Breitbart News reports.
Polish investigators briefly detained two Belarusian nationals but released them after determining they lacked evidence of direct participation in the murder.
Dissident Artist Targeted Putin Regime
Kuzovkov was known for his provocative artwork openly critical of Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Kremlin leadership. His portfolio included unflattering portraits of Putin and Chechen strongman Ramzan Kadyrov, with one painting depicting Putin held in the arms of Soviet dictator Josef Stalin.
Just days before his murder, Kuzovkov posted a video from Berlin on his YouTube channel showing himself discarding a Russian flag into a trash bin on June 12, a date marking Russia’s sovereignty celebration.
Pattern of Russian Sabotage in NATO Territory
Polish officials believe the assassination may be part of a broader Russian sabotage campaign targeting NATO member states, aimed at spreading fear and undermining support for Ukraine among its most steadfast Western allies.
Since Moscow’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Russia has been linked to multiple assassination plots and attacks against dissidents and defectors across Europe. Exiled activists have been targeted in France and Lithuania, while German authorities have disrupted schemes aimed at the head of a German arms manufacturer supplying Ukraine and Ukrainian military personnel.
In 2024 alone, Polish security services arrested a man suspected of plotting to assassinate Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. That same year, a Russian military helicopter pilot who defected to Ukraine was killed in Spain, with Russian operatives identified as the principal suspects.
