NYC Mayor Mamdani: “ICE must be abolished
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani called for abolishing ICE on MSNBC, citing endemic cruelty in immigration enforcement and rejecting concerns the stance harms Democrats politically.
On Saturday, on MSNBC’s “The Weekend” program, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani stated that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) must be abolished.
Co-host Yugen Daniels referenced conditions at the Delaney detention center in New Jersey, where detainees have begun a hunger strike, and asked Mamdani about his reaction and what would prevent the establishment of a similar facility in New York.
Mamdani responded by expressing “pain” over what is happening in such facilities. As he said, the conditions there offend the conscience of many, not only in New York but across the entire country. For precisely this reason, he has advocated, along with others, for the abolition of ICE, arguing that “there is no way to reform this cruelty” that characterizes immigration policy enforcement.
He added that his city is proud of the “sanctuary city” policy it follows, the decisions it has made, and the executive orders it has issued so that all city departments comply with this direction.
When Daniels asked him how he responds to those who, even within the Democrats, believe that slogans like “abolish ICE” politically harm the party, Mamdani emphasized that previous capitulation to such pressures led to where we are today. “The time has come,” he said, “to shape a new vision for this party, a vision that will not compromise on its principles.”

With his statement, the New York mayor is reiterating a radical position that has been heard repeatedly from segments of the Left in recent years, according to Breitbart. The proposal for complete abolition of ICE comes as discussions continue about detention conditions and the enforcement of immigration laws at the federal level.
