Minor League Baseball Team Forfeits Over Pride Jersey Refusal
A minor league baseball team in York, Pennsylvania forfeited a game after several players refused to wear LGBT-themed jerseys for Pride Night, with the team choosing to cancel rather than let them opt out.
The York Revolution announced Thursday that it would cancel its game against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs rather than allow players to opt out of wearing rainbow-colored uniforms. The decision came after several Revolution players declined to participate in the LGBT messaging, prompting the team to prioritize its political activism over the scheduled athletic competition.
In a public statement, the team acknowledged the forfeiture and announced that Pride Night would continue at WellSpan Park as a free admission event. Tickets for the canceled game would be treated as rainouts and could be redeemed for future contests.
The Revolution’s management made clear where its loyalties lay, stating that hosting the political event was more important than forcing players to wear jerseys they are not comfortable with and playing the game, according to the team’s official announcement.
Team Condemns Players, Pledges Donation
Rather than supporting players who exercised their conscience, the York Revolution publicly criticized its own athletes. The organization declared the players’ stance as completely inconsistent with what it called its vision as the “Most Welcoming Place in York.”
To underscore its commitment to LGBT activism, the team announced a $10,000 donation to the Rainbow Rose Center, describing it as a gesture of regret for the last-minute schedule change and support for what it termed “LGBTQIA+ representing partners.”
The team emphasized its partnership with the Rainbow Rose Center and other advocacy organizations, stating the forfeiture was the best way to maintain consistency with these political alliances.
Pattern of MLB Players Taking Stands
The York incident follows recent examples of professional baseball players refusing to comply with LGBT messaging during June, which activists call Pride Month. Several San Francisco Giants players recently demonstrated their disagreement with such politicized events, as reported by Breitbart News.
Landen Roupp, a Giants starting pitcher, wrote the Bible verse Genesis 9:12-16 on his pride-themed cap. He explained his decision as a representation of God’s covenant and promise, adding that he was thankful to live in a country where citizens maintain freedom to believe and express their convictions.
Major League Baseball subsequently issued warnings to Roupp and relievers JT Brubaker and Ryan Walker for displaying Biblical references on their caps during Pride Night. Pat Courtney, MLB’s chief communications officer, confirmed the league had warned the players about future violations of uniform regulations.
Republican Pushback Against MLB
Vice President JD Vance and other Republican officials criticized MLB for its warnings to players who displayed religious expression during politically charged events, according to Breitbart News.
Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Ryan Thompson defended his colleagues, including Los Angeles Dodgers players who also received warnings for wearing Bible verses on their caps. Thompson explained that when Roupp wrote a verse about the rainbow, it did not signify opposition to anything but rather demonstrated his support for Biblical teaching.
Thompson noted that the rainbow holds special meaning for Christians as a symbol of the Noahic Covenant, a Biblical promise made by God to humanity.
